Looking to pair Icy Box IB-290StUSD-B with a Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 2.5” drive for a fast, compact and easy to use external drive setup, I just have a couple questions before i place my order.

1. Will the hard drive be ok heat wise in the enclosure as it's a 7200RPM drive ?
2. Will the enclosure be able to power a 7200RPM drive from USB ?
3. Any other suggestions for an external drive setup ?

Thanks

you'll only get the full speed out of it if you use the esata by the way, all usb2 drives are limited to around 30mb/s

but that's a might fine pair

if you're using esata then get the black, otherwise, just get a cheaper drive

Thanks for the quick reply.

Putting stuff onto the drive will always be esata but reading and copying from will be usb most of the time, I will probably get the black to make the most of esata speeds.

I was thinking about doing the same but have found that the 500GB 2.5" drives are about just as fast in constant read/writes but obv not in access times.

I found that the access times won't really matter though in transferring data but if you had windows installed and it was in a laptop then the 7200RPM drives would be better.

The 500GB 5400RPM drives have more data densitiy per platter so that's why it's about as fast.

Just thought I would let you know and the Samsung 500GB is on TWO so only £30 more

Hope this helps, Doug
