External HDD Speed

Just did a hdtach on my external WD 250GB in a Speeze enclosure :confused:

it's connected via USB2

How only 23MB/s?

Theoretical maximum for USB 2.0 is 480Mbits/sec = 60 MBytes/sec.

Actual throughput will be sometimes substantially less than the theoretical throughput for various reasons (including protocol overheads and the efficiency of the USB chipset.) 23Mb/sec is not too bad, though I've seen slightly better. (Aside, firewire has less protocol overheads etc and thus are usually (sometimes substantially) faster in the real world even though USB 2 is theoretically faster.) I'll go do my USB Icybox tonight if I remember.

Burst speeds as follows

my usb2 came out at 31.1
my firewire at 41.7,
74raptor at 125

With my Western Digital MyBook 250GB I get 29.2MB/s.
