external HDD - streaming media?

Is an external HDD any good for streaming media from, like mp3's and HD movies? Can the bandwidth cope?

Also how much faster is firewire than USB? and is an external HDD slower than an internal one?

both USB and Firewire are fast enough to stream media, so I should imagine that the external harddrive is more than capable of doing so.
