External HDD

If you want a particular brand of drive then it might be worth buying the drive and external enclosure separately then assembling them yourself.

Buy a good desktop HD and fit it into a USB2/Firewire enclosure. Just find out details on the chipset in the box. If it's Prolific make sure it has a flashable firmware chip (I have Prolific 3507 and it gives me a lot of grief when connecting, no data loss or corruption just refusal to auto-detect over firewire) Seems ok on USB though.

anyone reccomend a good desktop hard drive and enclosure excluding western digital has i have a lot of problems with the 3 that i own

Well logic says get a Seagate Hd as these are the only 7.2k Hd's where the entire range are backed by a 5 year warranty.

I just bought a Seagate 250Gb HD and Icey Box which works really well (Have the option for both USB2 + Firewire). It is both quite and fast with the added benifit of looking kool :p

Drivers are only needed for <Win98 (You will find this the case with all USB Hd's)
For 2000/XP it's simply PlugnPlay :D

another thing will a seagate sata II hard drive work normally in a usb enclosure as i have had problems with my western digital sata II hard drive just working in windows
