After an external HDD to connect to my laptop for a larger option for storage and backing up files.

I've already got the files on a 500GB HDD installed in my PC...so from what I can see I've got two options;

1) Buy an external enclosure like the Icy Dock MB-559US-1S for my HDD

2) Buy a new external HDD like the Seagate FreeAgent ones

My backup drive is about 3 years old if that makes much difference, advice would be appreciated :)

Could anyone recommend what would be best? I'm leaning towards an enclosure due to being the cheaper alternative

Enclosure + Drive of your choice is my favoured option. Don't get Seagate FreeAgent at the moment - you never know what might be in it (might be a 7200.11 of which there have been a lot of failures lately).
Oh, and if you go for a 2.5" drive then it can easily be installed into the laptop as an internal should it be necessary. You can get 2.5" caddies.

Thanks for that advice, think a caddy it is then.....at least that way I can put my existing back up HDD into it and just carry on using that without having to transfer files etc.

Think I'll go for the Icy Box External Enclosure IB-390StUS-B 3.5" eSATA + USB 2.0 Combo
