Hey guys,

I'm looking for a new external backup drive, specifications would be a reputable brand with a reasonable warrenty, 1 TB storage, backup software isn't too important and lastly USB and if possible Firewire. Pricing should be under £150, any ideas?

do you want it to be compact?

If so get yourself one of those small 2.5 inch drives
and then pick up a 2.5 inch caddy

all it requires is 2 X USB ports no need to plug that in :)

You can't get 1Tb 2.5" HDDs though.

The idea, however, is sound. A decent caddy and bare 3.5" drive is the best option. I'd suggest going with eSATA rather than USB though, the speed advantage is worth the effort of sorting out an eSATA port if you don't have one already.

Isn't it possible to have both USB and eSATA, also any advise on drives? I've heard mixed views about Seagate on their 1 TB and my sister's 500 Gig Seagate died after only a week.

Also any good cases?

Aye, most eSATA caddies will have a USB option as well.

For a drive I'd probably be looking at the WD Green, it's not the fastest drive the world's ever seen but for a backup it's fine and it's cracking value for money. For a caddy probably the Icybox 360 or the 390 depending on which you prefer the look of. I'm not sure if the 360 still comes with the blanking plate eSATA converter or not, the 390 I'm pretty sure doesn't.

i would use this which fits floppy drive bay and comes with usb and esata leads for 1tb just by two of each

with this 500gb 2.5" notebook drive

or the cheaper WD 320gb 2.5" notebook drive with 5 year warranty which i use with the icy dock

you can undock your drive or drives and power thru usb on other pc using either usb or esata very handy

Squarish as in a standard USB connector (as opposed to the trapezoidal micro-USB one)? If so chances are the Antec will be the same, I've yet to see a 3.5" caddy with a micro-USB connector

Squarish is in more equal where as say the USB cable for my HTC handset or my external WD and Seagate are all the same. The one supplied with the caddy was like the one my printer has.
