I'm planning to upgrade my WHS v1 to WHS 2011. To do so, I need to copy my data over to an external hard drive.

I'm considering getting a WESTERN DIGITAL Elements External Hard Drive - 2TB to temporarily store the data. Once I'm done with it, I'm planning to take the drive from the enclosure and put it in my server. Are the drives in these easy to get out? It's not proprietary or anything, it'll work on a standard SATA II connection?

This should be fine, although it may be a strictly one way process.

When the hard disk prices were not so reasonable. I bought three Seagate external 3TB drives and broke them open for the drives in them, in doing so however, I had to break the plastic casing tabs that clipped the case together, so no way to put them back in casing.

Bear in mind that you'll void your warranty when you open enclosure, and also, with my drive, the USB-to-SATA controller they had were doing some odd things, and I had to reformat the drive once internally installed in order to use it.
