External NAS or USB3 storage?

I'm after an external storage device with RAID1 support, can anyone recommend anything nice and quick?

Having never used USB3 even though i've had the capability for about 6 months now...is the transfer speeds better than 1GB ethernet? I'll go for whichever option proves quickest.

My storage drive just made the most awful crunching sound when i accessed it, the thought of losing all the stuff in it frightens me!

I've got a LinkStation Mini™ and only get about 25MB/s transfer speed using gigabit network which i thought was a bit slow. On by usb 3 drives i get about 70MB/s, even moving between two drives connected through a hub.

My Synology Diskstation DS212+ averages around 55-65MB/s over GB ethernet so is plenty fast if you want to go down the NAS route.

Are there any USB3 external storage solutions that also provide a RAID1 option?

The only USB3 external storage devices i can find are all single disk things designed to be portable, i'm after something more in between NAS and portable storage i guess.

I cant post a link, but if you google

ICY BOX IB-RD4320StU3

the first couple of results might be an example of what you are after.

Alternatively you could look for an e-sata DAS (Direct attached storage). I have a Tera Stor Sata Raid unit that has 5 bays and does RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and JBOD.
