Hey guys,

Been thinking about getting an 22" Imac (2016/2017) model, but used as they are are far too expensive new.

Now most of them in my price range come with a Standard 1TB 5400 Rpm hard drive which is not going to cut it,So was thinking about going the external SSD route for the OS.

However ive seen you can buy a Nvme to USB 3.1 adaptor on well known auction sites for around £20/25,Would this actually work and get Nvme speeds or just not possible over USB 3.1?
Because that would definitely be a better option for me if possible as i already have a 250GB nvme drive spare.

cheers!

USB 3.1 is 20gb I think? but its more likely to connect at 10, which is ok for 500mb a sec.

I use TB3 on an external nvme for 40gb

I just checked the drive and TRIM *IS* enabled on the tb3 drive at least, running Catalina

Thanks so much for your replies guys,Decided to go with a 2017 Imac 4K that has the 250GB SSD already inside so no messing about and less clutter on the desk :)

i have a 2TB Nas + 500GB External hard drive so storage shouldn't be an issue :)

Looking forward to joining the OSX side :)
