External power?

I've got a Seagate GoFlex 1TB External HDD which i've had for about 1 and a half years now, its always worked perfectly

I changed extensions recently (from some masterplug surge to belkin) and upon plugging everything back in this external hard drive doesn't want to work

When I plug it in 2-3 lights flash for a second then goes off and it's not detected anywhere.

After a few minutes of being plugged in via USB the power light comes on but none of the other 4 lights come on and again still undetectable by disk management

The plug works fine as I've tried it in the 3tb seagate drive and powers it up, guessing it's the SATA-USB bridge chip?

any ideas?

or not

just removed it and tried it internally and BIOS isn't recognising it, great...

never once had a problem with it until switching surge strips? :s

Done that, connected it via sata (said tried it internally in previous post) but still no sign of life, couldn't feel any vibrations as if it was spinning

Tried it in HDD dock same again, nothing and no sign of spinning.

Only had it about a year, guessing switching power somehow killed the PCB?

oops, that's me not paying attention yet again. :o

is there anything vital on the drive you don't have elsewhere? i've heard of people replacing PCBs but i wouldn't know where to start. :p

Not really, was one of my backup drives

Basically have;

3TB - Backups current PC (daily) and other external drives (once last oct)
1TB (Dead) - Backup old PCs

So have a relatively old backup of the drive, just worried if that drive died suddenly like this with no signs of it failing when my other 3TB drive is a Seagate drive as well and it has the main backups on

i had a seagate external drive randomly fail recently as well. there were no signs leading up to it. i tried googling disassembly instructions because it had some kind of security screws - turns out it was so old that it had an IDE drive inside. :p

the only thing you can say for certain is that it'll happen to anyone owning any drive from any manufacturer. as always, never rely on one drive for anything important.

i've actually been looking around at getting a new portable drive but all i see is tales of how flimsy and weak the USB connections are on newer ones. i'm so put off that i've ordered an internal drive. i'll most likely disconnect the power cable when it's not in use.

Yeah i'm considering getting internal 3TB one just to backup the current seagate backup so if it does fail i'll have the internal one to rely on

Just before christmas I bought the 3TB one so thank god I did or i'd be out of backups :p

Don't see why it suddenly died from the switch of surge strips though or could have been pure coincidence

One of my other externals is old WD drive, power on hours is over 38600 shame the seagate couldn't live up to that :(

I left it in the HDD Dock forgetting about it and just accidently hit it

so took it out and put it back in and it seems to have powered up lol, taking a backup atm then i'll stick it back in enclosure and see if it works again
