Without blabbering on too much,
I sold my old PC but kept my hard drive before i moved abroad. I'm using my girlfriend's laptop as a temp measure, i want to use the data on my old hard drive so i'm going to get an external USB2 enclosure.

Will my HDD with the data on once fiitted into the enclosure be recognised by windows from the get go? or do they usually require an empty formatted drive?

Cheers :)

yup, it'll usually be able to detect the hdd and access the data.

but take note of whether your hdd is IDE or SATA and get the correct case for it.

I managed to get one (arrived today actually) that takes either IDE/Sata/ CD/ DVD Drives. Just came with a few different cables.

It will just come up as another drive in "My Computer" anyhow. Like when you insert a USB data stick
