External USB 3 SSD

I need more space for my Surface Pro.

One thing I like to do is store a complete Virtual Machine image of my desktop PC but I want higher performance then running it on an external HDD.

Is there any reason I can't purchase a 250 GB and put in an enclosure?
 
it should work fine, sata is sata inside an enclosure.
in fact, yes it will, I did it the other day as I had to mess about with images and the laptop i was working on only had one internal drive.

Not sure how fast it will perform on USB 3, Havent been able to test out any new controllers. I was using eSATA as the laptop only had USB 2.

This is all assuming that the surface pro has no issues itself though.
