Hello

I've a house that's around 100 years old. Solid walls - no cavity walls here. It get super cold in the winter, and the walls seem to radiate cold. So we're thinking about external wall insulation.

We'll fit it over pebbledash (it seems that you can do this without removing the pebbledash) - and use brick slips where we have brick to keep the character of the place. We're also planning an extension sometime in the next couple of years, so we're not sure if we'll wait for that to happen first and then render everything together.

Cost is a concern. But I hear there are grants? Also humidity/ ventilation is a worry.

Have any of you done external wall insulation? How did it go? What do you wish you'd known at the outset?

Didn't go ahead myself in the end but had a quote in May 22 from a reputable company that came in at 21k for approx 150sqm. Yes £21,000...

Had similar concerns to yourself around potential damp issues and given the cost/ROI just thought I'd be better off just sucking up the heating cost.

In the end I went down the solar/battery route which seems the better and more straightforward investment

No grants as far as I'm aware at the moment. Govt pulled the 5k green grant back in 2021

I considered it but if I pull the plug on an extension I'll only have about 20% of the current footprint that could be insulated "externally" facing. The rest is large windows/doors anyway.

I had house externally insulated. Did it before we lived in the house so no idea if it made a difference.
No issues with damp, although the guys did cover up all the air vents. I later open them up and put a grate over them.
The insulation will cover your existing downpipe drains, so they will need to cut a piece out and re-pipe the drains to go into them.
Its not as strong as a normal brick wall and guy said not to be putting a lader up against it without distributing the weight across the wall.
There was no grants when i did it, but cost was not much more than re-rendering the house! So well worth it, looks like a nice house when finished.

Thanks, all!

I've had 2 wildly differing quotes £26k and £11k. I need to look into grants, clearly. For me it's not just about saving money on heating bills but the house is so cold even with the heating on it's about comfort too.
