Hello, my friend as asked me to try and get the data off her broken WD passport.

It would seem on a mac and windows it spins up but nothing is home. Look in disk management and its there.

So wondering is there any software to get the data off this ? I cannot caddie it as WD has implemented there own connections on it.

Thanks all for any advice and help.

Hey there, gooseuk.

Sorry to hear about the problems you and your friend are experiencing with that drive. :\
You are right that it's quite possible for that model to have a proprietary connector, but the hardware encryption wouldn't let you recover your data without the drive's original enclosure anyway (to be more accurate, it will be encrypted and useless). Taking the drive out of its enclosure would also void its warranty.

So for now I'd recommend that you post a screenshot of what you can see in Disk Management while you have the drive connected to the computer. You could also give it a go with a different USB cable, just in case.

You could try data recovery software as well, to see if you'll have any luck with the files.

Hope that helps. Please keep me posted.

Sorry with the late reply.

Here is a photo of the drive. Warranty wise the lady aint to bothered about as its a few years old now. And she has another one in its place.

I have two of the cables and both the same result.

Here is a photo of the connection.

Thanks for the picture, however a screenshot of Disk Management while the drive is connected to the computer with its original external enclosure could be more helpful.

As already mentioned, unfortunately, due to the hardware encryption you need to use the original enclosure of the drive if you want to recover any useful files.

If data recovery software or Ubuntu Live USB can't access the HDD, then I guess you best be would be a data recovery company: WD Data Recovery Partners.

Can recommend Kroll Ontrack, their software is pretty average but for actual data recovery they're one of the best in the UK. I've always had great results and support from them.

Interesting you've got a WD Passport problem, I'm in the process of recovering what I can off a WD My Passport here for a friend. Controller is toast and takes 20+ minutes to respond to any requests but through repeated read attempts through Recuva I've got 99% of his data back (it's taken nearly 3 weeks running it 24/7 through 3 times). This drive has a USB3 connector on the damn disk so it was the only option! (friend not prepared to spend hundreds on recovery).

Figure WD isn't the way forwards with external drives, gimmie a SATA connection any day! ;)

My wd passport stopped working,it wouldnt show up in disk management, tried the usb ports on my pc,ps3 and xbox,it was dead.

Was gonna throw it away, then decided to take it apart

Got the passport case open, and pulled the drive away from the connectors.

Then i thought i would connect to sata cable and power cable inside pc.

It works, the drive is fine,it was a bad usb port on the passport case.
