Hey guys,

My mate has an ASUS Rampage Extreme 2 mobo I think, but he's only got 4 gig of ram and it seems to suffer when playing games like SWTOR and BF3

He's got a decent GFX card so don't have to worry about that but would like an extra 4gb of ram to help performace while he saves for his upgrade.

Anyone got any ideas of what would be good for him?

Cheers

I bought an extra 8gb (would have been fine with 4 but as it was cheap...) and it helped my performance no end, solved all the stuttering in BF3 and everything! :D

Since i bought it windows generally runs with about 2.5 - 3gb as standard with a couple of windows open.. Ive seen BF3 up near 6gb of RAM used.

Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit (CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9) [CMZ16GX3M4A1600C]

Would this be suitable? As I'm thinking he can use this in his new build too!

If this is his board - link - then it will take the memory but he may have to run it at 1066Mhz as anything above 1333MHz is classed as a OC and not guaranteed to work (it may run at 1333MHZ or even the full 1600MHz just no guarantees - a BIOS update usually helps with memory compatibilty if he does have problems). However, this isn't a problem as he will be using the memory in a future build and make full use of its speed capabilities then.

Also, he would be better off running just 3 of the sticks so that it's running in tri-channel mode. 12gb in tri-channel will be faster than 16Gb in dual. Again this isn't a problem as he can use the other stick in his future build.

The only other thing i would add is that the Vengeance is high profile and gets in the way of large third party coolers. If he has one or is thinking of getting one i would choose 16Gb of Kingstons or similar low profile memory in its place.

On looking at the board further the Mobo that he has is this. http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/Rampage_Extreme/

Would it still fit in that?

Ok, totally different board/format - but still DDR3 but only dual channel and most importantly will only support upto 8Gb of memory in a 4 x 2Gb.

So no, it wont be able to run 16gb of memory - or even 8Gb of 2 x 4Gb strips. He would have to buy another 2 x 2gb sticks to match his present set - i.e. he would need to buy a set hat matched the timings, frequency and voltage - or as close as possible. Ideally he would buy the same again if possible.
