Extracting file failed.
It is most likely caused by low memory (low disk space for swapping file) or corrupted Cabinet file.

This happens on certain EXEs, Net Framework 1.1, XP SP2, DX9.0C .. basically most of them. The EXEs all work fine on my main pc (the same exe) and I dont know whats going on.

Got this on a fresh install of : MCE05, my slipstreamed XP SP2 (which is fine on my main pc btw) and I've just tried XP SP1 (original non tampered factory CD) and it still does it... so Im certain its not my windows install... we're talking fresh install, no drivers or anything (same result if i install all the drivers), and i get this error if i try to install something.

I have however changed my motherboard to a MSI K9AGM2 (so i formatted, and thus i got this error).

ATi 690G chipset, realtek onboard lan and sound.

Anyone ANY ideas?

Closest I've gotten is when a forum search yielded 1 result, of which it was mentioned it might be the motherboard's firewall, however I cannot find anything in the bios relating to a firewall :(

ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL BE TRIED :(

So its only EXEs and not zip or rar archives?

Where did you download the files from? Server could be corrupt or something? How much RAM have you got? You've probably got at least 1Gb which should be OK. Unless you're running loads of things at the same time whilst extracting you should have enough RAM so I'm concentrating on the corrupt cabinet file idea here.

It could possibly be the RAM so perhaps run MemTest86+ but for the moment I'm going with the files are corrupt because the server they came from was dodgy in terms of busy or something.

This is where you tell me you got them off Microsoft.com. Have you tried using Windows Update; from what you've mentioned it seems that you can get these files through the Windows Update process.

Hope I've given you enough to think about. Reply back here with ye answers and we'll see what the state of play is then.

Files are fine, came from MS.com :p AND i've had them for ages, used them on various installs, and they were fine.

RAM is however new, 1gb stick (value stuff too - eek), I'll put a stick of my g.skill (known working) from my main rig.

Still not much food for thought bar the RAM though... i'll update in due course, later this evening.
