Hey,

Recently i have been experiencing slowdowns when i open certain applications such as media player. The hard drive activity LED lights up solidly and the system can take up to 3 mins to open my documents and other programs.

Today i bought a new Belkin N+ router, set it up from my other PC, but when i turned on this PC it took about 5 mins to boot and it hangs a freezes on everything i do :(

I have scanned with Malwarebytes anti-malware, Defragged the drive using Vopt, But neither has made a difference.

My spec is,

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Asus p5q
Intel Q9450 @ 3.2
4GB Kingston HyperX 1066 Ram
Nvidia 9800gt
Western Digital Caviar 500GB
BeQuiet! DPP 450W

Any ideas what might be wrong?
Thanks

Thanks, I tried the one you suggested but its not compatible with windows 7

Also found one on the WD website, burned to disc but when i tried it, it did not recognise my drive and said there was no drive detected

Is there any SMART checks you can run in the BIOS. It's a little concerning that a WD HDD tool does not detect it's own HW.

There's plenty of tools available on the net you can burn to disc and boot from to check the HDD.

Normal stuff first:

Check memory
Hard Drives

Maybe do a system file check too. Is this the same hardware as an old build or not?

Virtual drives can cause problems, I actually had a problem with a virus checker on W7 (mind you this is on the 7100 version back in the day) an uninstall fixed it.

Have you tried the system in safe mode, to eliminate drivers / other potential issues.

Just ran a memory test which found no errorsl, then booted into safe mode which ran fine with the hard drive light only flickering every few seconds, so im guessing it's a driver or program issue.

Do yee old uninstall any antivirus applications.

It *COULD* be something network related, I remember I had a faulty network cable on a work PC which would constantly make the system freeze up while it searched for shared folders. A simple new cable fixed it.

Try disconnecting from the network to see if that works. Reinstall drivers, and uninstall anti virus. Virtual drives and the like could be a suspect too.

Ok, uninstalled anti-virus and powerISO, neither had any effect.

Unplugged the network cable and restarted, it felt a little more responsive but still very slow and the hard drive light still lit solidly.

Could this be the cause?

33K events lol! You could try the error check in the tools menu on the hard drive.. See if that can fix anything, its worth a shot
