Extremely low budget £200

if your careful in the second hand route and very lucky you can build an i7 rig for like £180
i know, cause my i7 rig i built out of spares and repairs parts after fixing them.
Before the ram it totalled £85

Don't listen to this.
You get stupid lucky/unlucky, to try and repeat what you do would be madness.

When you can, change the PSU and case ;

195 shipped.

Very similar to most people, but my suggestion would be:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) £56.99
1 x MSI H61M-P31-G3 Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £33.90
1 x Intel Celeron G530 2.40GHz Socket LGA 1155 Processor - Retail £32.99
1 x OcUK Imp MicroATX Tower Case (500w PSU) £28.99
1 x Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £23.99
1 x Samsung SH-S222BB/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £14.99
Total : £203.84 (includes shipping : £10.00).

Then you've got plenty of space to play with. Though if that is not an issue, the cheap 60GB SSD is a good choice.

I wouldn't touch those cheap case/psu combos. Tbh 60 for psu + case is fine when you think about how much people spend on them in higher budget pc's. 100 pounds plus each in some instances. He could probably find something different elsewhere but from ocuk's choice I think those are fine for his needs.

g530 is a great cpu for its price and has integrated graphics

He won't get a used q6600 for 30 pounds, and he'll have to get a cooler for it. It's always nice to get new instead of used too not to mention lower power consumption.
Not imo, waste of money, overkill... Built tens if not hundreds of pc's in those cheap cases, the PSU's only pop with gfx cards that draw too much of the 6 pin pci-e plug. Only had 8 or 9 of them pop out of about 70, all by adding heavy gpu's in the pc, with a gpu that is onboard or doesn't need 6 pin pci-e, it's fine.

The psu bit, okay though, but don't spend more than a tenner on a case then, essentially just a metal box with holes, leds and buttons, no point spending 30 quid on a case for a budget pc.

The cpu, hmm, looking at benchies they do seem to perform well, but still, I fear the name Celeron from the old days :p. I guess it's an okay choice, but 40 for a basic board is rip off imho, 40 quid is a price for a full options board on S775.

If he goes socket 775 though he will need to buy a graphics card and ddr2 ram. It will likely end up more expensive with no warranty. Suppose he could get a cheaper case, I just hate them :D

Personally for your use I would go with a cheap Net book/Laptop or Net top like the Acer Revo. You'll be able to get something new and with a small form factor and you'll also save on the leccy!!!

You can get an external DVD drive for under £20 that will plug in to the Acer Revo etc. for when you need it :)

Acer revo's are very laggy even doing basic things, I have one. Any laptop or notebook for that price will be a headache as he said he want's something that can handle multiple tasks smoothly.

Surely second hand is the way to go here? If its only light use then you could easily find something suitable for your budget. My opteron 146 with 2gb memory would do the job.

Sorry but I don't agree with this at all.

The OP said

"this build will be mainly used to surf the internet, and do work such as word processing. But i would like it to run smooth so i can do more than one thing at a time"

I've owned a Acer Revo in the past and used it for XBMC plus NAS with a 2TB HD hooked up to the e-Sata. I managed to use Office and surfed the net without any noticeable lag and even played quite a few older less demanding games on one.

I've also just took delivery of a Acer One netbook that i bought from a member on members market for £90 which I'm certain would do everything the OP wanted to do.

I still believe given the OPs requirements a Nettop or Netbook is the way to go. He would have the option to buy new or second hand, it would take up less room and be a neater solution and would also save on is electric bill :)

However if the OP wanted to play modern games then I would be giving different advise!
