Eyefinity 6 cards and crossfire?

Hi Guys,

New years resolution: Buy More PC Stuff! :) But I'm out of the loop a bit when it comes to hardware. Old age..

Going for a nerdy race simulator rig with 3x 27'' 1080p Asus screens (displayport) on the ATI 5870 6 port eyefinity card, with two regular dvi screens for desktop work. I think that should connect fine with the EyeFinity 6, perhaps needing a few mini displayport to 'regular' displayport adapters for the Asus screens.

However 3x 1080p is pushing the limits of the 5870. Are the Eyefinity 6 cards just as Crossfire-able as any 58xx card? Can I just plug in a 5850 for example and leave all the screens connected to the 5870 Eyefinity 6 , but have SLI enabled to help game performance?

Alternatively, might it be possible to simply get two 5850, use the correct adapters to get 3 screens on one 5850 for the gaming rig, two desktops on the other card, and then have crossfire on the 3 screens? I realize its likely that I'd have to disable the 2 desktop screens connected to this second card then..

Any comments on if these options will work and if there is anything I should look out for? Plenty of power and cooling etc, don't worry about that..

Cheers
Niels

get 2 5870s or 6870s and they will do fine on any of the racing sims i know (rfactor, raceon, live for speed, iracing, gtr2).

Dont know how to connect them together. Btw edit your post :) ATI dont do SLI.

I currently run 3 samsung 1080 screens in eyefinity on a 5850 and for all the games I play I get perfectly acceptable performance out of it.

All my screens are dvi so I connect two up using dvi and the third on a sapphire active dp adapter, using an eyefinity 6 card you will as far as I know need the relevant adapters. I don't know if they need to be active or not. Either way the extra vram on the eyefinity 6 is certainly going to help. I would say stick with the eyefinity 6 (if you already have one) and see how the performance is. Thats what I did and as yet haven't felt the need to upgrade.

let me know if you need any more info :)
