Eyes wide open...

My Grandad had open-heart surgery a couple of months back, despite being completely under he said it was the most horrible experience in his life... also my Father has physically watched surgeons reattach his thumb...

Myself, has had nothing like this done, and would never want it, that looks grim and horrific. Amazing how far medicine has advanced none the less.

The selective amnesia would bother me. Is it due to the sedation? I seem to recall that sedation can temporarily prevent new long-term memories being made.

Yes, all gabaergic drugs like benzodiazepines, carbamates, barbiturates, GHB and alcohol cause anterograde amnesia, they slow down brain activity so affect all areas of cognitive functioning.

That's a little grim!

True thing about wanting to be out cold. Especially if something goes wrong and the surgeons begin to panic!

Does the epidural just numb or does it temporarily paralyze too?

I had an epidural for 3 weeks when I had a cancer removed from left femur.. and yes.. it's completely paralyzed.. no feeling at all. It felt like touching some else legs (and even weiner.. as I had no sensation from belly button down). Weird feeling.. I would rather have strong painkillers if there is a next time.

Erk, I had no idea this was possible. Fascinating. So you could watch surgery on your own heart, with a monitor mounted in a suitable place. I think I'd pass.

Me too. I think if I could see something like that happening, I'd have a panic attack and my heart would start beating faster, which isn't exactly what you'd want to happen.

or a mirror just above.

theres no way i could do that

I wouldnt want to know anything of it. Seeing the surgeons etc and all the hype would make me feel awful (if thats possible when under all those drugs!)

Most people seem to be missing the point of the IV sedatives. When these take effect you simply couldn't give a toss about what they are doing to you.

Regional anaesthesia is simply much safer than general and has numerous advantages for the patient.

However, giving the nerve block injections for regional anaesthesia requires great skill and can be temporarily uncomfortable for the patient, at least they were when I gave them:D

Not for me, I would rather sleep through something like this.

I have been in a surgery when the patient was not put under properly and woke during the surgery. Must have been very frightening

Thats the whole point, when your patient woke up they were immediately in great pain.
With regional anaesthesia the patient could warn you when they started feeling discomfort which could be swiftly dealt with.

was watching the screens when the did my angiogram and stent operations, i know it's not in the same league as that guy but doing what they did to me was bad enough!
