Just installed F.E.A.R. on my pc and can't get it to start up. I get the

"F.E.A.R. has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

the second I click on the icon.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Yep and yep. I've been reading around and apparently a quite a few people have the same problem.

The apparent temporary fix is to uninstall a critical windows update:

- Control Panel -> Add or Remove Program
- Check the "Show updates" check box.
- Look under the Windows Updates
- Select KB917422 update and remove it.
- Restart.

It's a kernal32.dll update and is describes by microsoft as:

"A security issue has been identified in the Windows Kernel that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer."

Anyone had a similar problem?

Thanks

same thing happens with GR:AW but only if you have Kaspersky installed :)
iirc MS have released another patch to fix it, i cant remember much more tho :/

you get the same problem with aols active virus shield which is essentially kaspernsky... even if you switch it off.
it works if you uninstall the virus killers though

As mentioned in a previous post, there is a MS fix to the hotfix that breaks Kaspersky with games .

I cant remember what it is , but i have the file saved, so ill check it when I get home.. I can confirm it deffinatly fixes fear as i had same issue ;)

Probably best you don't install the game. You might not make it alive posting on this forum ever again.

Yeah but i don't fancy uninstalling critical updates...

sorry to thread hijack but when i installed fear and launched it for the first time, i tried to do the update and install that and it kept upon installation of the update it kept saying something about not working with us or non us versions?

anyone come across this problem?

Not sure what the problem updating would be. maybe run out of hd space ? :)

I recently baught the UK dvd game (now i have a system capable of playing it properly (demo ran badly on my x800xt) and downloading and installed the english full 1.0->1.08 update patch. I didnt encounter any issues so cant really say why the update fails on your version :|

it's definately not the disk space as i have 13gig free on my raptor and about 209gb free on my seagate! i'l try manually downloading the update from another site i think as opposed to going through FEAR!
