F.e.a.r

its all about the 2gb imo... the smoothness when I plugged 2gb into my machine was above expectation in games like fear.

wow, didnt think games these days needed 2 gig. Ive spent so much on my pc i cant afford any more mem at the min
:(

well first off - turn soft shadows off and reduce the environment / mapping textures down along with shadows and see how that goes.
AA/AF shouldnt affect the speed as u should be cpu / ram limited... u just need to minimise the stuff getting loaded into the system memory, which reducing the environment textures should do!
A defrag like u said wont hurt either - also make sure u aint got something hogging the memory.... Oracle test server perchance? :P

Yeah 2gbs getting common now, Fear/CoD2/BF2 etc... all benefit form 2gb, and there'll be more coming.

I can play COD2 with everything on max.

I set FEAR to min details on everything and its still paging like mad and slowing down. the same speed if i have it on full detail???

You answered your own question here..(Paging = needs more memory)

2GB is really a standard now for highend gaming.

Not quite the truth, with 1Gb RAM it can work quite good but you need to have very little running before starting a game, I have ~23 processes running before running FEAR and it plays just fine, sure it takes some time to get the desktop back after the game but ingame it plays just fine.

I found the best way to stop games like FEAR and BF2 from stuttering, was by upgrading the 2Gb of ram, this way it loads the entire level to ram and doesn't need to cache it off the HD...

Only problem was on an A64 system you really only want to be running 2 sticks of ram to stay @ 1T timings, so you may need to sell on your old ram in the MM... ;)

Something doesnt seem right there, i only have 1 gig and didnt notice any stutters, well apart from when it auto saved.

All

Been playing this game with my GTO2 and now my new 1800xt. I put everything on max but it plays rubbish.

Ive got a 64 144 running at 300X9 2700mhz

All other games can run at full res of my 19" tft just this game really struggles. Is there a know setting which i need to turn off.
Cheers
Puck

i have x8100xt + a64 3200 (2.5hgz)+2gb cas 3200 ram

all settings on max , physics meduim no soft shadows 1680x1050 runs like a dream

I tried playing this last night:

A64 3200 @ 2.4ghz
1gig XMS3200LL @ stock
X850XT @ PE speeds 1024x768

used auto detect, game runs fine in some areas but in others where it needs to load stuff i get stutters :(

AA off, 2x and 4x didnt effect this, so I guess its because I have 1gig only

using a FRAPS tool whilst playing FEAR the actual game fps is higher than the benchmark it said for the most part. on indoor bits it was over 100fps. as soon as there was action it did drop to 60fps though.

2 gig helped with FEAR for me only paused slightly when it does a checkpoint, i loved the game might even go back and do it again on a harder lvl when i get a new video card

Q

I am a little dissapointed with the pausing in fear with 2 gb. Worst area so far is just after the ed209 type robot comes throughthe ceiling of the apartments, when you just exit to the rooftops.

Everything is maxed out at 1600, 2xaa, 16xaf though.

Maybe the pausing isn't memory related?

Far Cry had the same annoying pausing with nVidia cards in the beginning when you started to shoot, iirc that was solved with a patch.

Somehow I think it is sound related as a lot of times it happens when a new sound is involved, maybe try lowering sound acceleration in DXDIAG from full to normal?

i started getting stuttering in fear, but did the latest update for it and voila, note i have 1 gig of ram and 7800gtx! so the ram didn't affect the performance for me
