F1 2012 - This whole 'stepped-nose' thing

When they walloped a kerb at speed the wheel lifted a good few inches into the air as the bov operated and completely softened that dampers bump damping, the momentum of the car keeping it reasonably level and then the wheel slammed down pretty rapidly afterwards.

Errr... *cough* Apparently. ;)

Hmmm... I wonder where my Penske damper is?

Interesting.... Never knew that! :)

Smartarse :p might as well say when the last car crosses the line at Brazil!
i see where your coming from, but what i meant was that Q3 will be the first time the top teams go all out. they sure wont be giving it everything in the free practice sessions

The most useful thing about testing times is to get an average long run time, say over 10-25 laps and compare that between cars. At least that way you know fuel loads will be relatively similar.

Unfortunately all the reports have on them is a list of headline times, which is completely useless.

unless refuelling has been brought back and i dont know about it then the teams could have a massive difference in fuel loads for long run tests

So they enforce the lower bulk head and everyone but McLaren have to go back the drawing board for front end aero :D

Can't see it happening tbh. By the time they sit down to discuss it people will have stopped caring about the looks anyway.

The stepped noses will be going in 2014, regardless of the outcome here.

At least the FIA are talking about this now, a couple of months before the teams start planning their 2013 cars.

Yes we won't see them in 2014, seems the teams raised the issue for this year and talk of a mandatory cover to hide the height transition. There is time for the FIA to change the 2013 regs without every teams approval. We will have to wait and see.

They will have to be even lower than this year. In 2014 the nose tip must fit into a zone just 25cm high. That's 30cm lower than this year.

As far as I know, 2014 is still set for the introduction of 1.6 litre V6 turbo engines.

Yeah I knew that. There is a load of aero changes too, but I was specifically asking about the nose height.

Yeah I knew that was happening, but that wont stop stepped noses unless they lower the maximum height of the baulkhead, which as far as I know isn't in the 2014 regs (yet).

I wonder if this years McLarens nose would fit the 2014 regulations already?

There are certain cars that just look so 'right' for that generation of car. Sort of the blueprint of good looking cars. In the early 90's is was the Williams. Early 2000's was the Ferrari. the Brawn is that car for this generation. It just looks so good.
