  • Engines will be able to be started from inside the ****pit with no additional equipment needed.
  • KERS capacity doubled - 120kW
  • Narrower front wing and simpler endplates and flaps. 1,650mm down from 1,800mm today.
  • Weight increase - 660kg up from 640kg today.
  • Minimum weight for KERS and Engine is now 155kg. Up from 95kg for the engine alone.
  • KERS only in the pit lane.
  • 8 speed gearboxes only.
  • 1.6-litre V6 engines, limited to 15,000rpm, down from 18,000 today.
  • V6 will be a fixed 90° angle with the turbo inside the V and the exhausts outside.
  • The FIA will allow a dispensation in 2014 when teams nominate which gear ratios they will use: “For 2014 only, a competitor may re-nominate these ratios once within the Championship season, in which case the original nomination becomes immediately void.



F1 cars to use electric power in pits from 2014
F1 cars will have to run on electrical power only in the pit lane from 2014.
The technical rules for 2014 published by the FIA state cars must run “in electric mode” with “no ignition and no fuel supply to the engine at all times when being driven in the pit lane.”

Liking the look, smaller front wing, double kers, kers only in pit lane.
Also very interested in as well as energy recovery from no brakes. Energy recovery from exhaust heat as well. Anyone know anything about this. This can't mean turbo as that's air flow rather than exhaust heat?

Teams will be able to use both kinetic energy recovery and, for the first time, also recover energy from exhaust heat

One lot of gears for all races, wtf how is that going to work. Can see lap times massively increasing.

IMO it's all meh...

Regs should be:
Small front and rear wings with no intricate endplates.
Ground effect
1.5 turbo with unlimited layout/cylinders
Limit fuel but allow refuelling
Unlimited kers and energy recovery.
Keep the pirellis as they are
Bin DRS

At least they are using V6 engines instead of I4 and @15k so should still sound nice.
 
Im not sure on the exhaust heat energy recovery, unless they have a a small boiler and turbine, which sounds like a mad steampunk racer/f1 car...
could it be technical jargon for the Hot exhaust blown diffuser?

The thing that interests me is the whole "engine being able to start from inside the cockpit" so where gonna have no punishment for cocking up and stalling the car, what next remove the close barriers and have massive run offs..... oh wait we have its called Bahrain turkey etc

I've not read the PDFs yet, but I don't think it's one universal ratio for all races.

I'm assuming that it means the nomination is a set; a season's worth of ratios, one for each track. Nominated ahead of the season.

Even that seems a bit odd/harsh, though, as I thought gear ratios were an essential part of car setup fine-tuning [unless my Grand Prix Legends-based knowledge is wrong :D].

Maybe the margins are so tight, and the teams' knowledge of the tracks so total that it's not necessary these days *shrug*

What?

There is no cockup involved in stalling the car. F1 cars have had anti stall for years. This regulation is to work with the 'engine off' rule in the pitlane (i.e. the drivers can restart the engine as they roll out the end of the pitlane)

It wouldn't need it, the kers is rotating the engine. All you need is the ecu to put fuel in and ignite it.

It does seem a bit of a random rule.

Yes, but like DRS and the pit lane limiter, I doubt they would allow the ignition of the engine to be automated. The driver will need to press a button to start/stop the engine as he enters/leaves the pitlane.

I can't see how it cant be automated. It will be automated with the press of the pit lane speed limiter. It needs to control the engine, or you'll have engine breaking.

Where a start button has to do different stuff, got to be in neutral a d fire. The engine up when stationery, with fuel flow and the rest.
Where pit lane, the kers goes through the crank so the engine will be rotating.

Hopefully be lots of articles on all the aspects in the future.

Ok, look at it this way. Starting while rolling out the pitlane will mean using KERS to rotate the engine, and then the ignition being hit and fuel pumped in and brum, off you go. At the moment KERS doesn't do this. What the rule states is that the drive must be able to do it himself. Current cars have no start motor or way to pre-spin the engine, and requires a man with an external starter. You cant have a bunch of guys sat at the end of the pitlane with these waiting for their driver to come along. Therefore the driver must be able to do this himself. Thats all the rule states. The proccess of flowing fuel and ignition must be driver controlled. Likely, as you say, linked to the limiter.

However, what this does is turn KERS into a powerfull starter motor. There is therefore no reason the exact same proccess cant be used to start the car from stationary (switch on the KERS motor, pre spin engine, ignition, fuel, brum). The only difference is wether you are or aren't in gear.

I don't think its a rule to allow people to get away with stalling the car on track. I mean how often does that happen anyway? Its simply that to allow the engine to be switched off when entering the pits, and switched on when exiting, the driver needs to be able to do this himself. Something F1 cars don't curently do.

I don't think it's for stalling as its so rare, which is why I said it seems odd. Maybe cost/safety as kers is already in it and is essentially just a big starter motor. Making it yet another reason for teams to get to grips with it.


If it's what you suggest one button will need two ecu maps. I just can t see that happening. Pit lane limiter and a start button. I may well be wrong, but to me it does make sense to have a start button that starts the end, just because of kers in the pit lane.

Rules look good to me.

Shame about rear wing and DRS. Other than that I agree it's pretty good. Not perfect, but certainly a lot better than recent changes.

Reading the rules, no lead based solder allowed in electrical systems, didn't know that.

electric cars down the pitlane, 15000 rpm your avin a laff incha

technology to make cars go faster and be louder, not save the planet, let the tree huggers do that.
 
Then you msut be well aware that research and innovation is an integral part of F1.
Electiric is the future, electric is faster than petrol. All the power from zero revs.

And at Keats these rules allow for some of that. Rather than boring lack of much in the past few years. Not perfect, but better than recent rules. Much rather jut a set fuel limit and allowed to build what ever engine and ERS they want.
