F1 is just the cars, not the drivers

I think Alonso far outperformed his car last year, but yes Vettle had the superior car but when pressure he often slipped up, but he did have some amazing races

Agreed. I wanted to believe Vettel was just lucky in the best car but he's clearly an epic driver to go with it.

Ah, epic driving. I remember when Senna got on the radio to cry to his engineer, begging for the guy to make him able to pass his competitor when his own skill wasn't up to it. And who could forget the time Schumacher drove straight into a distance marker because another car wasn't letting him past quickly enough? F1 needs champions like that.

For instance, when Schumacher was winning year after year, was his car the fastest on the track or was he and his team just skillful and strategic enough to win against faster cars?

I read in some long discussion on the Autosport forums last year that only Schumacher/Ferrari were using special Bridgestones that none of the grid could afford.

It's a little bit of both. It's usually skewed slightly more than one way than the other, but it depends on the regs at the time, who the driver is, and who's designing the car. There isn't a single right answer for every situation.

This is basically a statement I just heard on the radio. A presenter and guest (not sports people) were saying how they didn't really like F1 because it's all about the car and not the driver. This is obviously an over simplification of F1. But it made me wonder, has anyone in the history of F1 ever won a WDC while NOT being in the fastest car on the track? For instance, when Schumacher was winning year after year, was his car the fastest on the track or was he and his team just skillful and strategic enough to win against faster cars?

If he puts it that way then yes.

I watch F1 because of the team and the overall package. It's a technical sport therefore some teams will be stronger than others.

It's no more than saying Football is about the team and not the player!

Because without the support of management, and other player's you won't find one player who will outshine unless they have sheer brilliance.

Just my 2p

He dragged that 2009 dog from what was it, almost last on the grid, to what should have been 3rd place or at the very least a 4th place. And then his team screwed it all up by lying to the stewards. So yes. Opinion denied.

I take it you mean in the Australian GP when the likes of Vettel, Kubica, Kimi amongst others did not finish? Along with total chaos at turn 1 from Rubens slow start causing damage to plenty of cars?

Didn't Tottenham prove that a few nights ago?
