I think important sporting events should be free to air, but I disagree with you that we should be moving towards a greater showing of sports on terrestrial TV. I don't see the point in that at all.
I wish that the BBC would keep showing F1 as it is great coverage, however with the spending constraints of the BBC (and their shocking practice of urinating the cash up the wall) the camels back has to break somewhere. I imagine the cost per viewer of the F1 is just too high for them to continue in their current guise.
I'd be happy with the BBC just showing the race and not bothering with Jake et al.
