Met some mates for a lazy lunch today and spent an hour or so hooning around in each others motors. Got to have a run in the new M6 (didn't drive it) and the M135i.

M6 is brutal and very fast but it is miles off being worth the money I feel. It was the soft top version and it left me utterly underwhelmed and to me I see this as a bit of a pointless car in the UK. I'd take the M5 over it without question and it has issues, not least trying to lay that much power down through the rear wheels and, well, stopping. Like my F10 some of the details are very poor, such as the plastic running along the binnacle above the steering wheel, just crappy and cheap looking and some of the detailing around the centre console. As a soft top it also felt loose and unless I was living in the US or middle east I really can't see the car appealing. I simply don't see the point of so much power, so little frugality for 95% of the time and for the other 5% there are simply better cars, not least a 911.

M135i is utter genius. You boys and girls taking delivery these are lucky people, it is a brilliant little car and in real world not much slower than the M6! Sure, right sort of road and the M6 would vanish, on the roads today nah and up to 80mph there was little in it, we tried. It's rare to get into a car and feel at home within 1 mile, like I could get it to 95% after a seat adjustment but the little 1 is like that and its power delivery and speed are deceptive. The M6 felt MASSIVELY quick the 1 didn't but when behind in the M6 we were ASTONISHED to see how much pace was needed to hook back onto the 1.

Utterly brilliant little thing, I can't see anything £31K new that competes as a hot hatch and personally I think it looks OK too. I fully appreciate now why they are selling like hotcakes and the 8 speed auto suits the car well. The DCT in the M6 is rather good too to be fair and supports my view on the RS4's not being very good compared to it.

The M6 has something that the M135i does not, which is an aura of menace. I'd also have it all day long over the tarted up executive saloon that is the M5. It's different and stands out, so in spite of some minor quibbles about the trim, I'd have it over pretty much every other current road-going BMW. Expensive it is, but that's because it's unique.

Oh, and it's the best looking BMW on the road.

The M6 has much the M135i doesn't but that is missing the point I was trying to make. I was not suggesting it was a choice between the two, I was suggesting the M135i does what it does much better than the M6 does what it does. It's not that the M6 is bad for it isn't and I agree they are a bit of a looker but it's too compromised and has too many things that don't quite add up.

I suggest it all comes down to our differing perspectives.

I'm with you on the convertible theme. My dad has just bought a convertible 650i, I tried hard to persuade him to go for the Coupe but he was adamant.

Clearly money isn't a concern if you're dropping nearly £100k on an M6 convertible but I just don't see the point when all you'll be doing is cruising with the hood down. Also, you cant hold conversation above 60mph due to the wind noise.

but he was adamant.

You should stand and deliver next time.

My 5 series and the 6 more so in M form have a horrible habit when carrying speed of rear end lift on bumps that saps the power as the traction systems do their stuff and worse unsettles the car significantly. I never remember this being something I had to deal with in the M3's or in the M135i today and I know I go on about damping but this is important when the roads get bumpy as it has an impact on how much speed you can carry with confidence and I feel BMW have not got this at all right on the current F10 on run flats and I felt, though only from the passenger seat, the same on the M6 today.

Middle east is too hot for convertibles. To me this country is ideal for a soft top.

The climate is so mild that any time of year as long as it's not raining you can get the top down.

I'm on my fourth soft top now and love them.

Love the beefy little one series too.

I know you weren't suggesting that it was a choice between the two. I was just trying to make the point that no matter how much more capable the M135i might be at what it does, that doesn't mean that people with cash want what it does. It's just a posh rude hatchback at the end of the day; not that special.

I'd want a big bold brash GT that makes people stare if I was that wealthy, so since you mentioned and compared both cars in your op, I'm thought I'd do the same in mine.

I say again, I suggest it all comes down to our differing perspectives.

The M135i owner was a former GT3 (2 x off) Turbo (2 x off) C2S (1 x off) CSL (1 x off) from new owner and this is now his day to day car. The chap who was in the M6 could buy 10 if he so chose and he didn't like it at all and he has one of the most enviable BMW collections and history in the UK, so a pretty solid basis on which to form his opinion. I suggest an M135i might be turing up in his collection soon I know as a fact an M6 won't. All about perspective, many people with money are not all about d'bling, some are and they will buy the M6, no doubt so people stare.

I ****ing love the looks of the 6 series! Definitely the best looking model in the current BMW range. Would your wife not consider an M135i Housey?

Also, fancy lunch some time? :p

I agree, no argument, the M6 is a real looker. M135i is more than i want to spend in all honesty. We are taking money out of cars at the moment rather than putting more in....for now at least. ;)

That's funny, I've seen a few soft-top M6's around here in Santa Barbara and they look ace :D

I believe BMW even launched it here? :p

So they did - o hai looks familiar! Eeeesh at low profile run-flats along a wood-board pier though, that can't have been comfortable :p

You see in Santa Barara with that weather, those long roads and fuel prices it would make much more sense. Here, for me and my mates today at least, it simply doesn't.

I love the concept of the M135i. It sounds like an utterly brilliant car from what I've read, and what you say further confirms this. Still, it's not the best thing on the road in terms of looks, but I can forgive that. Great VFM considering what else there is out there at a similar level.

When emission standards are ridiculously high, and petrol is £3.50 a litre.

Why you got to ruin it for me...the only thing I dislike is it's looks. It's awkward looking, the new S3 is more handsome, just no doubt less fun.
