The 2014 FA Cup with Budweiser Final will take place on Saturday 17 May
The FA has confirmed that The FA Cup Final with Budweiser will return to having its own day in the football calendar next year.

The 2013/14 FA Cup Final will take place on Saturday 17 May, a week after the Premier League season has concluded.

Alex Horne, The FA’s General Secretary, said: “We’re well aware that fans and media have been calling for The FA Cup Final to have a day to itself and we’re delighted that this is going to happen for 2014.

“It’s the first time we’ve managed to get The FA Cup Final a stand alone date since Chelsea v Portsmouth in 2010 but there have been various reasons for that, not least the two UEFA Champions League Finals at Wembley Stadium, which have been fantastic occasions and required huge resources and a massive build-up time behind the scenes.”

Next season’s FA Cup competition has 737 entries and will start on 17 August with the Extra Preliminary Round.

A kick-off time for The FA Cup Final will be confirmed at a later date.

Great news, and about time. The FA Cup Final should always have its own day after the season finishes, and I'm glad the FA has finally seen sense and done that.

Some common sense at last from the FA and the UEFA finals will be either side of it:

Europa League: 14/05 (Juventus Stadium, Turin)
Champions League: 24/05 (Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Lisbon)

How many years did they try the final before the season ended? Was only 3 tops wasn't it?

Not sure why they even changed it in the first place. Common sense finally prevails.

Off the top of my head, it was the first time the new Wembley hosted the Champions League final and some UEFA restriction where whichever venue hosts the final cannot have another game played there the week/10 days before. When you factor in the various playoff games played at the end of the season it must have been too congested, so they moved the cup final forward.

Fair enough, didn't know about that rule. Wembley didn't host the CL final in 2012 though? Not really important, just haven't read up on it and was starting to wonder if it was some sort of cost saving thing they were going to make permanent.

Just glad that it's back to normal.

No, but I think they brought the Cup Final forward to try and give our domestic players more time off before the European Championships. I think we all saw how well that paid off!

Bring a workday forward to ensure a longer holiday?

Wish my employers were like that.

The kick-off time will not change and remain at 17:15:

The FA Cup Final will be permanently staged at 5.15pm after the BBC insisted on the kick-off time as part of their deal to buy the live television rights to the competition, a move that will upset football traditionalists.

The FA was criticised for the late scheduling of the showpiece game in May because of the transport problems for supporters returning to the North West. But when the new broadcast deal was announced at Wembley yesterday, Greg Dyke, the FA chairman, claimed that the timing significantly increased the television audience, which peaked at 9.4 million when Wigan Athletic beat Manchester City 1-0.

Dyke said that Wembley’s car parks could accommodate 35,000 fans travelling by coach as he announced that the world’s oldest knockout cup competition will return to the BBC after an absence of seven years, in a deal worth about £300 million shared with BT Sport. “One of their [the BBC] conditions that they put in was that the FA Cup Final will continue at 5pm — 5.15pm as opposed to going back to 3pm,” Dyke said. “I personally have no problem with that. I know that some people in the FA who think it is a betrayal of a condition but the world has changed and you have to accept that.

“It seems to be that the increase in the audience at 5pm is so marked. What are we here for? We are here for people to watch football. So that is one of their conditions. It is a permanent move.”

Really pleased about this. It's what makes the competition so special. Didn't matter who you supported, you watched that final. I even cheered on Everton once ;p Just once though.. Against Man u after beating Spurs 4-1 I think at Elland Rd :(

However, finishing 4th in the league is deemed more successful than winning the cup it seems. Shame.
