Also obligatory semi related comment.

This women, oh god what a disgrace. Probably the worst Politician out there, remember when she mentioned last august that twitter and facebook should be able to be shutdown temporarily. Who are we? China?

That woman is a waste of oxygen. Shows how low standards have dropped to become an MP. I'm guessing she was fast tracked because she is a woman because she sure as Hell wasn't fast tracked for being an excellent representative of the people.

Not to sound like I'm advocating facism or invasion of privacy, but surely if you have nothing illegal to hide, you wont have to worry?
When can I come around to install the CCTV cameras that I only have remote access to? Would you be happy with your neighbour watching what you do in your back yard all the time?
The point is, private conversations are private. They are nothing to do with the government. I don't mind walking down the street with a camera on me, I just don't want those cameras to enter my own home. The government are guaranteed to do something bad with this data, it's not what they are saying it's for ( Real criminals don't use unencrypted connections). Just have a look at what the Patricio act is for you, you will be gobsmacked out to find that 90% of the time it is not being used for "terrorism".

Or am I missing the point?

Oh uh, watch out, the whole "I've got nothing to hide" makes people angry.
But personally, I don't care.

The only thing I do care about is having personal information publically accesible, which is what I can currently control.

In theory it's not really the governments business to know exactly what it's citizens are doing/saying, it should be providing the best possible environment for citizens to go about this business instead. So going 1984 on everyone is a bit stupid as it's effectively presuming citizens are guilty of something and need monitoring (and oddly making the sovereign look less sovereign as it needs to protect it's self).

In reality it's a bit of a waste of time though which is more the outrage, doubt anyone going about terrorism is really going to conduct it over Facebook (unless the gov wants to clamp down on people with Nazi memorabilia)

One very sensible description of her. She represents many things that are bad about politics in general (and a few bad things about members of the Tory party)

I think the government should get a taste of their own medicine, why don't they make their browsing history publicly available, after all they might actually do a public service for once * giggity *gigity*, Cameron is into feet I heard. I bet he knows some mad sites.

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin.

Also, you're willing to trust the Government with this information. If you think they'd willingly stop at just using it against the bogeymen of terror and child porn then you're either very misguided or an idiot. Probably the former. ;)

The problem is what you deem "nothing" may well be misconstrued by the government. There have been a number of cases over the last few years of people getting into trouble for offhand remarks about stupid things that plenty of people joke about.

Your online persona has neither context or any real truth to it. You don't post about boring everyday stuff, you post about the exciting stuff, the stuff you think will amuse your friends.

Its not a good idea and the real usefulness of it is negligible I would have thought. If I ever decide to start a jihad, I won't be announcing it on twitter in the form of a throwaway remark so beware!

Not fussed about the privacy - cant see there being much hot gossip on FB or twitter.. unless theres secretly an invite only al qaeda group ive never seen.

I am bothered about the massive amount of data that is consumed on these platforms and the cost to monitor that will be a total waste when theres bigger fish to fry IMHO.

Perhaps someone in power is annoyed that he can no longer get his share of FB profile pics from reddit now  [/hottopic]

I know. That's why I said the line about monitoring protected tweets.

Of course they intend to monitor protected tweets and other private communication. What would be the point otherwise?

As long as it's targetted monitoring with due cause and a warrant, I'm OK with it. I suspect they're after routine trawling and data mining, though. If not immediately, then soon.

I'm genuinely unsure if you're serious. Surely nobody with any sense could make that statement other than as a troll (if they don't have power) or a threat (if they do).

if i have stuff i need to hide i'll hide it. i sure as hell 'aint going to be posting it on FB.

bit of a waste of cash, but on the flip side it will catch out a lot of dumb scummy peeps like the london riots.

I'm into privacy... but not when you're posting stuff to a public domain. I don't see the problem unless twitter and facebook are making all your private messages viewable by these people.

shock horror as virtual world catches up with the real world?

Can anyone explain why they think activities on the internet should be treated differently from activities that happen in the real world?
