Facebook asking for proof of identity

The fact you assume it can only something sinister says something about yourself Greebo ;)

As said, it's no big deal, I just delete the account. It's a shame not to have the fb connection with the dozen or so people I want on there, but it isn't the end of the world if I don't.

I guess I can always just pretend I'm someone's pet dog, that's acceptable.

So tell me cause ive not seen anybody give a valid reason in this thread, why do you need a fake/alias fb account? I'm honestly intrigued.

Private person? But like to gossip...

Kind of famous?

You are going to say, just make it a private profile and unsearchable but sometimes your face show up in friend of a friend who doesn't have as tight privacy setting and the fake name put most people off the trail.

You really have to ask that?

Facebook is an absolute gold mine for information.

The problem for the majority of the population of Facebook is that they don't understand how to use privacy controls, so you can basically get their life story just from their name.

This is why they do it. They pride themselves on having an incredible amount of legit, accurate information about real users that advertisers can use to target their ads to. The more 'fake' accounts there are, the less valuable the advertising space is, hence they take these measures to reduce the number of fake or duplicate accounts. This way they can charge advertisers more and give them better guarantees that the ads are being displayed to the intended target audience.

Just put your name in irish into it. It'll not be close to your english name lol. Lots of kids at my university do it.

Location: GlitterCraic HQ

Location check outs :D

Good idea actually, I'm guessing they've got all the Irish names whitelisted, yet the associates of the person requiring the alias wouldn't be any the wiser seeing an account by that name.

To add, I had this request a while back. It was for a business account using the business name, completely transparent, not trying to hide anything.

It was created before they introduced pages though, and I never made the transition to a page as the messages functionality was always more fully featured on a friend account, so it would have been a reduction in features and ability to effectively interact with my customers to close the friend account and switch.

Eventually they said either submit photo ID, convert it to a 'Page' or merge it with an existing one. I was able to merge it with the page I had created, but wasn't very active. All of the friends I had were converted to likes on the page.

I was tempted to create a fake ID to reactivate the friend account, but the pages functionality and dedicated app have progressed enough that I never bothered to in the end. Although it was a shame in one sense, as I can no longer interact with customer's posts when they post images of our work on their own wall, which we could do as a friend.

I personally can't see why you wouldn't use your own name?

As we're on the topic of privacy, there used to be a way of viewing your own profile, as if you were someone else. I can't find it any more. Any idea? My profile should be locked down pretty well, but want to make sure.

Pretty much this. You can only control so much of what is spread on there, other people can post up and share whatever they want though.

Concerned that FB suddenly amend profile and privacy settings without warning? Funny that eh :)

A friend has recently had to change his despite the name he had being a professional alias (he DJ's and writes under the same name), I think it is a bit rubbish, and think it is quite dodgy for them to request copies of peoples identification, as I don't think anyone should trust FB, but it is their site, and nobody is forced to use it.
