Er....? lols.Microsoft obviously overpaid for their 1.6% share of FB. The value of the company is almost nil in reality because it is not profitable. Furthermore, it has no business model nor does it have any convincing way of becoming seriously profitable in the future. It's wide open to competition and has just shown this by changing so much to be similar to Twitter which was not necessarily a competitor to begin with!

Facebook sells advertising - just like Google does. The difference, however, is the level of granularity that Facebook gives you. You can choose for your advert to only appear to, for example, 30 year old single men from London who have a degree and mention the word 'marketing' within their profile. This extra level of targeting means that Facebook advertising offers a CTR far in advance of the industry standard and thus they can charge more (they use a CPT model). That's the reason that Facebook advertising is becoming increasingly more attractive and is becoming a hot-potato within SEO/SEM circles. Whilst this certainly shouldn't be Facebook's only route to profitability I have no qualms in believing on its own it'll eventually provide at least a break-even point.
I'm aware of how they can generate money, but so far, it isn't shaping up to be this ultimate cash-generating machine. Its dependence on consumer taste, its haphazard policy of changing large sections of the site rather controversially and its susceptibility to competition means the return on any investment needs to be all-the-higher, which is essential for its long-term viability.
They changed it to allow them to compete better with Twitter, hence the bigger focus on the status updates.
Which was the first thought when i saw it - very twitter!
but if i wanted twitter i would be on twitter. im not and i dont want to be.
And you've demonstrated more intelligence than those that can't accept it.It changed. I went "Oh it's different." I got used to it. I carried on with my life.
Am I the only one using bebo lol. x

I've just noticed too. Kinda annoying - especially as if you post a news story with adverts instead of decent pics! Also, has anyone noticed there is now no way to collapse your own wall messages into defined levels of detail as there was before? This was a great feature IMO. 'If it's not broke - don't fix it' seems to spring to mind regularly.
