Perhaps because for some it supplants "strong ties" relationships? What i mean is i accept the argument for "weak ties" connections (in terms of business/career etc) and their existence But a facebook "friend" is not the same as a real friend (not very helpful way of putting it!)
havent read all the article (30 pages) i'll read when i get home.
Lots of other reasons as well but thats a starter![]()
Because its just technology telling you that you have a social life. Same goes for msn. They're just tools that we use, nothing more.
At least, thats my interpretation anyway.

I hate how people can see that im online.
If I wanted to chat with people I'd log into msn.
Luckily facebook has a few problems where people get randomly disconnected from chat so I log off and use that as an excuse when Im not in the mood for talking to people.
In the bottom right corner, if you click the head with the green dot, you can choose to "Go Offline".

Are you trying to say it's just another way to socialise like a mobile? In which case I would agree. It's not the technology at fault, it's the way we use it.

Kind of. Obivously technology can be used in whatever subjective way people see fit, but I'm sure there are plenty of desperately lonely people out there with 1,000 'friends' (more like unknown contacts) as a result of Facebook. I see it as inhibiting.
Personally, I don't see the point of it, popular people don't need it as they go out anyway, lonely people (like me I guess) don't need it as we have hardly any friends.
I don't wish for this post to seem like its wandering but, I just don't see why something like World of Warcraft (still a community) is stigmatised and Facebook isn't.
Even forums (like this one) could be considered to be nerdy and geeky, yet Facebook is all cool & hip.

edit: damn beaten many times over! curse my love of red ovals.

Ive just gone offline like yhack suggested, is that permanent now or are you suggesting something else? (NickM)

Im a Facebook hater too.
People who feel the need to divulge every bit of information about their relationships too. Particularly in rough patches or through breakups. They decide its a good idea to air their dirty laundry so to speak to 300 friends, who they very rarely actually see in person.
