Facebook Marketplace Rant

Not only is the entire internet like this, people have the barefaced nerve to offer below the asking price of houses despite said house being marketed as “ offers in excess of X”.

I have never understood this "offers in excess of" especially in todays market where you see the same house still for sale months later.

The main thing that bugs me about Facebook Marketplace is the amount of people that set their items for FREE when clearly they are not.. Whats the point?

Yeah I guess.. If people are bothered with about derogatory or silly offers just stick the price in and then state derogatory offers will be ignored then do just that, delete.

My wife sells a lot of the kids clothes on Facebook when they've outgrown them, mostly next or disney and very well looked after.

She'll charge £3 for a top that cost £7, even she gets people offering less then having the cheek to ask for us to drop them off.

I've told her we're not doing it anymore, £5 delivery charge in the local area or they can pick up. If they aren't picked up in 5 days they go back on sale and the buyer gets blocked.

Simples :D

We occasionally sell some larger items on Facebook. Stuff that I can't be bothered with Ebaying due to the size/value ratio, and that I don't want to have to have using up space in the garage until I eventually go to the tip.

I don't use FB, so don't know how it works, but I think she just sticks it on a local FB group to sell, rather than a wider marketplace.

Having never used Facebook Marketplace until a week ago, I was amazed by just how common this is. Needless to say, facebook was swiftly deleted for another year.

I just need to figure out the best way to unlink other apps that I have used Facebook to login via and then I'll be deleting my Facebook too I think, it's a comical farce now.

That's just a clear example of a seller thinking the product is worth more than it probably is.

Quite possibly the same applied to the OP. He believes his item is worth X but people are offering less than X. OK some people are very cheeky (you wouldn't put a £150k bid on a £300k house).

An item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

The item I'm listing retails for £109, so have put it up for £85 ONO which I think is a reasonable base price, but people have the audacity to offer £15-30 which is quite absurd in my opinion.

One lady offered £10 and I asked her what makes her think I'd sell it for £10, she said and I quote "Becoz for £15 more people wud just buy from store whit 2 year warranty". I simply responded "The difference between £109 and £85 is £24 and I did state ONO, but you are dreaming if you think you'll source one for £10, good luck."

Given that 4 different estate agents valued the house at X, people chipping in with offers under 90% of X were extracting the urine.

Yeah i did say some people are very cheeky :p

For a lot it's just weighing up the cost difference between a new one, and a pre-owned one and deciding if that value is worth the piece of mind / newness / warranty / yada yada that comes with a new one.

Given that 4 different estate agents valued the house at X, people chipping in with offers under 90% of X were extracting the urine.

I think 90% could be perfectly adequate for an initial offer - (it's all dependent on house condition / how it compares with the local market etc etc..), afterall people tend to price their houses slightly higher to combat people coming in with lower offers. Frankly it's a ridiculous game, the seller should put a house up for a price that it's actually worth (rather than interpreted worth) and a buyer should accept that price. Unfortunately neither party play it that way, so you get ridiculously over-priced houses, and ridiculously low-balled offers.

I was selling our spare car, a Corsa worth around £2000. People kept ringing up, giving me their x-factor hard done to worthy story and would I sell it to them for £300. Can pay right away.

No. You cannot. Scum.

I can't abide people who throw in completely derisory offers - especially when the price in question is low anyway!

I refuse to use Facebook anyway but it reminds me of the kind of people you gef at car boot sales - I was once forced to do one by other half and I'll never forget someone asking about something priced at 20p asking if I'd take 7p for it!

Erm no! I'd rather set fire to it in front of your face than let you have it - even at full price now you've proven yourself to be a complete tool!

Why did you bother listing it at 20p? Just give it away for free?

Though I bet you'd still get people asking to deliver it then :D

Exactly!

For the record I had zero interest in being there and the **** we were selling wasn't mine and it was priced up by other people - I'd much rather have binned the lot and had a Sunday morning lie-in! :D

Exposed a guy on a local selling page a couple of months ago.

He posted a sob story about his family and how they were desperate for a good car but only had upto £300 to spend.

I don't know why but something didn't fit well so I check his profile which brought up his current marketplace listings, of which there were 7 cars, prices ranging from £600 to £4k.

He was using the sob story to con cheap cars to then flip for a larger profit.

some people get very inventive with money making/saving ideas.... that sob story to get cheap cars is pretty grim

last thing (kinda) like that I read on here was people buying expensive clothes just to take selfies then returning them!

Conversely I was looking for desk/workbench for my man cave and didn't want to spend much as it would be used for soldering/cutting etc. so made some enquiries on FB market place. Lots of suitable ex office/beaten up home desks for not much money. Did anyone reply? Not very quickly anyway. Had a couple come back days/weeks later with terse replies saying it sold ages ago (why the advert still up?) and one offering choice expletives for me offering less than the asking price. Said asking price was exactly what IKEA charge for the same desk brand spanking new. Since when is a used/worn item from Joe Blogs worth the same as the original retailer? Facebook marketplace is indeed full of **** heads :p

Happens a lot with people who call themselves "social media influencers"

My cousin runs the online business for a boutique fashion store and she's banned several "customers" for doing similar.
