I'd better be careful how I word this :D

I want to setup a Facebook group for around 100 x 14/16 year old students but it has to be closed from outsiders.
It will be used for them to get support from me and each other during their time with me.
Can I control it so unwelcome visitors aren't allowed?
Could I have seperate areas for the 3 different classes?
Would it be possible to upload documents (doc, xls) for only certain people to see?
Do I have the choice to only communicate with one individual so the others don't see?
Can it be set so that I can't see their profiles or friends on their own sites because that would be stepping over the mark?
Would they be 'my friend' but I wouldn't be their 'friend'?

Please get all your paedo remarks quickly out of the way and then give me some serious answers.

Thanks

Could I have seperate areas for the 3 different classes? not quite sure on what you mean here, probably easier to have 3 different groups perhaps?
Would it be possible to upload documents (doc, xls) for only certain people to see? I don't think you can upload documents to facebook just pics...not sure though
Do I have the choice to only communicate with one individual so the others don't see? yes you can message individuals privately like emails
Can it be set so that I can't see their profiles or friends on their own sites because that would be stepping over the mark? they have to set that in their security permissions, or just don't look

If you want some sort of collaborative online group for project work with real flexibility I can really recommend basecamp http://www.basecamphq.com/ but I can imagine this is over the top for what you need and there is a cost associated to it.
Would they be 'my friend' but I wouldn't be their 'friend'?

Dont think you can upload other document types than pictures and videos. You cant be someone friend without them being yours (though you can set a limited profile, so they cant see certain things such as pictures)

hmm I'm guessing you're a teacher then, so it may be "unseemly" to do this, simply because I'm sure theres some sort of guidlines set by schools about teacher/student facebook friends...

I dont think there's the facility to uploads documents, you'd have to just cut and paste them into bulletin posty things.
And also, It'd be far more sensible just to have 3 groups rather than try to split one up, that way you can't post the wrong stuff in the wrong place etc.
You can definately private message people, so that's not an issue.
You can't really choose not to see their profiles though if you add them as a friend. That is all up to them and what their security setting is.

You need some sort of content managment system which is geared to e learning.

If I remember correctly you teach nursesing of some kind dont you? I assume these students are enrolled at a college of some kind, it might be worth talking to them to see if they have a system already and they can give you access.

I know a couple of systems like that that my uni uses, but I doubt they are free. No idea about cost though. Names are WebCT and Moodle. Basically exactly what you are looking for I think. Teachers who use it just upload presentations of lectures, or reading lists etc to it and the students can talk to each other there and you can set up a number of courses as well.

I don't think it's free, but this isn't based on any evidence really :p so you might wanna look into it.

I presume you've been CRB checked and also have their parents permission for this? You need to be VERY careful when setting something like this up and I would suggest Facebook isn't the best place to do it.

Why, in your job, isn't there already a way for all this support to take place? Why are you thinking about taking it to facebook?

i would also suggest you think about what is uploaded to Facebook (read their T&Cs) and its content.

I wouldn't do the facebook thing dimple. You only need a parent to not fully understand what you are doing and all hell could break lose. One of my teachers had a facebook account and obviously the students found out and started adding him. A while later he was forced to either leave his job or close the facebook account.

You could use Joomla as a CMS for this, its free and relatively simple to set up, would still require hosting it somewhere though.

Have a look at this, its a little like Bebo, allows you to set up your own social networking site, and allows you to set groups where people only you invite can upload stuff and talk.
