Facebook - Tin foil hat

Could it not be that the people you meet have searched for your profile thus leaving a trace to recommend them to you?

Yeah, I'm assuming that's the case but people seem convinced it doesn't recommend people who have searched for you.

Did you "check in" where it was you went? If they checked in too and they are friends of friends then chances are Facebook put two and two together... no?

I've never checked into anywhere on FB.

I had my old landlady suggested as a friend once, who I'd only ever contacted by phone/post, and have no mutual acquaintances with. Only thing I could think of was FB on my Android phone checking through my numbers against those listed on profiles - I never looked at the permissions when installing it, but I wouldn't be surprised if I granted it permission to stalk me and signed over any future children in the process.

Facebook does sync with your contacts, depending on which option you selected when it installed it can sync with all contacts or just people you have as friends on FB.

If any of these people gave you their number then it could easily use that to match profiles.

Facebook is a joke, you use their feature to limit stuff to "only friends" yet when I tested it, it shared her details, all her albums (which we then had to lock down albums, and its still showing her wall comments and friends lists.

I have my mum coming to me at the moment, she is getting a bit paranoid which ok I dont blame her for, she has a right to feel safe. I have gone through privacy settings as much as possible but if you are not her friend, you can still see what I mentioned above. (I have tried to find where to get this to not show up if you are not a friend but cant find it)

If anyone can help that would be great

Freaked me out once when it suggested all of my old friends from my first primary school. I've not spoken to any of them for about 10 years due to moving to another part of the city. They have no mutual friends with me either. How on earth did it know?

The entire point of Facebook is to acquire as much knowledge as possible about as many people as possible and as much knowledge as possible about every possible connection between as many people as possible.

Why are people surprised that it's quite good at the very thing it was and is designed to do?

One of the reasons why I don't use Facebook is because I think the cost of using it far outweighs the value of using it.

Ask yourself who is paying for Facebook. Usually the people who are paying are the customers. Advertisers are the ones who are paying. If you don't know who the customer of the product you are using is, you don't know what the product is for. We are not the customers of Facebook, we are the product. Facebook is selling us to advertisers.

Facebook is not free to use. You pay. You don't pay in cash, but you pay.
