I have ordered a Xigmatek Dark knight, but am unsure about fitting, it is going on a socket 775.

i looked on the net and my confusion is because i have seen some fitted so the fan faces downwards, and some so the fan faces forwards, anyone know which is correct or can it be either?

Point the fan toward the exhaust fan.
Get rid of the hot air as fast as possible. If it was facing up then it was either for the PSU fan to vent, or the top fan. Plus, it may not fit in certain orientations depending on the case. You can usually turn the fans around anyway.

You can still mount it either way, you are correct, instead of being push pins, it is a screw job, but since the mounting holes are equally spaced both directions, then you can mount it either way.

i think i will mount it forward facing then like the existing heatsink, that way it will suck air in, and the 2 rear exhaust fans will blow the air out

Maybe the best thing to do would be to experiment? Try all the possible iterations if you have the time and thermal materials (and then post your results here :p)
