Need to rant and OcUK is the best place to do it!

Went for a job interview on Friday and thought i did very well, did a pratical which i passed with flying colours and then had the actual interview.

Got a phone call back today and was told i didn't get it because in my interview i mentioned that my current boss was one of my main reasons for leaving as he's always making mistakes and talks down to his team and is just not a nice person to work with.

Somehow, they understood it as i'll be a difficult person to manage which is complete rubbish and that is the only reason they didn't choose me.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Ouch, never **** off your old company, always make up some fluffy reason as to why you are leaving like "I wish to broaden my horizons".

Agreed with the above posters; as justified as you may be, the impression it gives is not of an easy-going person or of a team-player.

School boy error. Never bad mouth any previous employer to potential employers. Lesson learnt though.

Even in extreme circumstances where you might get asked "name something about your current manager that you do not like" or similar. Always say something like "I can't really find any faults with my manger, he can do X and Y really well and being a member of his team I have managed to increase my own skills in X and Y by drawing from our experiences together".

Essentially, always turn negatives into positives. Its like the classic "Tell us your weaknesses question". They don't expect for you to say you are lazy and incompetent. You turn the question around on them and start saying how you were not too bad at something, but doing X,Y,Z means that you have resolved that and increased your skill set as a result.

you never ever rubbish your current/ex employer to a prospective employer, it is the height of utter stupidity to do so, if your ever asked why your leaving/changing jobs, you allways give a generic, safe answer along the lines off " wanting a new challenge" etc.

what where you thinking.

That would be frowned upon in an interview (even if it is true).

A more nodding with approval response would have been something like "I want to seek further roles and responsibility".

Unlucky but never mind! All apart of gaining interview experience.

Apply for some other jobs, your get there.

Indeed. There are times to be honest and there are times to talk the management BS.

Never, ever **** your current employer off, it's negative. Always say you are looking to increase your skills, further your training and give yourself a challenge. Even a passing comment about your current employer made in jest can make you seem like a potential troublemaker.

Remember - you love where you work, the people are amazing and your boss is like a big brother/sister. It's just that you feel like you need a challenge, that you hope you can continue to see your current workmates in a social setting, but that everyone has to look for a new employer now and then who'll push you on a daily basis and where "good enough" isn't seen as "good enough" which is why I want to work with you Mr/Ms Interviewer.

Or some such dribble :)

Yeah, lesson learnt so next time i'm not going to mention him at all :D

Still a pain though.
Well, if not asked.

If you are, practice stretching the truth as described above. It might seem unseemly or even invite more questions on the subject if you clam up.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

they probably have a staff issue where the boss or a manager is a total ass, if it were a friendly team i doubt it would be an issue...

still better to stick to a very strict list of things to and not to say when in an interview...

they probably did you a favor though..
