Failed MOT need help and advice

So you've gone from binning the car to having all the work done and getting the wheels tarted up?

Business as usual for motors then :D

Yeah complete brake overhaul and exhaust System swirl flap removal...I'm keeping it....I couldn't get a car for 500 quid that drives like this bmw with this work done so it makes sense to me.

Thanks god for the euro part sale that incidentally ends tonight at midnight.:)

I think your idea of complete brake overhaul and mine differ substantially!

Good you've got a few things sorted at what sounds a reasonable price though - considering Honda will bend me over £500 just for the next service on the type R

£500?

I have never had a service bill as big as that in 8 years of servicing at a BMW Main Dealer. What on earth are they going to do!?

I took the car to the indy with a print out of all the parts from euro car parts.

The total for the parts was £297 inc vat...The indy said he had an account with them so he would get me the parts at that price to save me ordering them and he would charge for labour. So I am well pleased.

The handbrake was a non issue just needed some new shoes..The bracket for the exhaust was a welding job at 30 quid. So because of the sale on at euro parts and the money saved I asked the garage to remove the swirl flaps too.

After some thought I have decided to freshen up the car.It drives well so will keep it for a bit. I have booked the wheels for an acid dip and powder coating on the 14th may and have two new wings going on.

Just need to order the BMW centre caps...two new number plates and a new Bonnet badge.

Good on you. I thought you were crazy to consider scrapping, but I can empathize as its a bit of a shocker when you find a less than rare garage spotting you know nothing about cars and trying to rip you off royally.

Going into a garage with parts in hand or an idea of what needs doing generally stops them and if the price is high, they just can't be bothered with the work.

Im fortunate that my local garage knows me and what I will/won't do myself and we have a good chat about it. I'm trusting them to do the transmission oil next week as I don't have a 4 poster or flat enough surface to do it myself.

The only time BMW have quoted larger was when they said my gearbox needed replacing. Other than that, they did charge me £200 for a battery:(

It gets the valve clearances checked and adjusted at this one to be fair, possibly the box fluid too. The regular services are closer to £300. Its still just a scheduled service though, one of the things people tend to miss with Honda is that if you want to keep manufacturer history it generally isn't cheap!

Not really any point to be honest. I have an excellent specialist nearby who I've used before but even they will charge close to £400 - which i'm sure i'll be able to get close to from Honda just by asking.

Plus it's a one (previous) owner car with Full Honda history, for the sake of say £100 I'd rather just keep it like that. I also knocked £500 off the asking because it was due the bigger service, so it's not really costing me anything compared to what I was prepared to pay for the car if it had been done.

The specialist will do any actual repairs that I can't / don't want to though

12 months on and Failed again...

This time on Emissions and front OSF brake pipe critically corroded...

Does 99inc seem ok for this fix?

The garage told me to put redex in and rag the revs up on the way home..It goes in tomo for retest...

Brake pipe replacement is a simple job if you have the tools. I'd say forget the redex and just hammer it before you go in. £99 isn't a terrible price for it if you haven't got the tools to make your own.
