Well I failed my first practical test today, I went in to it feeling confident, did all the manouvers in the 30 mins before the test and everything was great, I felt confident and so did my instructor.

But it wasnt to be, I failed it with 4 minors and 1 serious fault. The serious was on the left reverse. Although its not something that normally tests me, I messed it up, took it nice and slow, got all of the observation in, I knew position was good because a car came past on the right and had plenty of space, just when I thought it was in the bag I took my eye off the ball and nudged the pavement. :(

Everything else was fine, im just so annoyed that I messed up, I can do all of the manouvers first time every time yet somehow the pressure of it being an exam just got me I think.

Oh well, I've booked another one this afternoon, just got to wait for it to come in the post now.

Little bit down but I think what I need to do it get right back in there asap so hopefully its a fast re-test.

Who knows, second time lucky? :(

Well to be fair, sounds like second time won't be lucky, but second time will be a pass :) It sounds as though you are capable of passing and would have done so bar a slight loss of concentration :) Next time I am sure it will all go smoothly for you :)

It is on the maneuvers, on the general drive its not - but touching the kerb on the maneuvers is a fail, failed first time for the same.

Good luck with the next test - getting straight back in there is the best thing to do.

I failed first time (at 17) then through a mixture of laziness, lack of money and not really needing car didn't get straight back into it. I eventually got round to taking my test again at 27 and I can't believe i went all those years without being able to drive

Yer I nudged it slightly and so as to not mount the pavement or make it any worse, I pulled forward about half a meter and then carried on reversing back in line and kept it quite neat.

But he says that as I touched the pavement its a fail straight away.

That's not what I was told. If it's obvious that you've lost control of the car and it rolls into the pavement, maybe...

Yer, I was talking to my instructor after the test, and he said its not very consistant, some examiners will fail you for touching the pavement, others will let you off if you correct it and its only a nudge, and some wont let you correct it at all.

It seems control on the manouvers is a very hit and miss subject as my instructor has a thousand stories were someone has passed for doing something you wouldnt beleive, and then someone else has failed for getting the slightest bit out of shape.

Sounds as though you haven't really done much wrong, so you should be able to nail it the next time. :) Just try not to get yourself wound up about it.

Well it's what i was told when i was doing the final brief - i tapped the kerb once during the day and a minor fault, then tapped it on the reversing around a corner and got a major, because the maneuvers were supposedly needing to be flawless.

Just passing on what information i was giving is all :)

I passed when i touched the pavement on a parallel park, he said it's ok as i didn't mount it and rectified the problem?

I failed my first test. On two things.

One I agree with and that was lane discipline on a very busy and very big roundabout, I didn't change lanes early enough taking the last exit.

The other thing she said was on my emergency stop I did a 7m skid! WTF!
The car was fitted with ABS and I was doing 20-25mph. Apparently she was a new examiner.

Anyway, she passed me second time round, she remembered me to.

That's absolutely backwards. How can hitting a kerb during regular driving be less serious than a small nudge while reversing?

Never mind, all the best drivers pass on the third time. Only girls pass on the first, need I say more.

Unlucky, I was told you had to mount the pavement to get a major.

As for the emergency stop guy, my instructor told me you aren't allowed to let the ABS kick in or something. I got two minors in my final test for not stopping fast enough in my emergency stop because of that. If you know the car has ABS and you need to stop in an emergency - why not slam on the brakes?
