Failing at basic maths

The most important question still hasn't been asked.

Will the pancake take the biscuit if the car wheels aren't turning properly, and if so what time will it be when the egg finishes rolling down the hill in to the grave yard, after the stick of butter completes finishing the construction of the toaster when it's finished boiling?

As others have said, knowing the area isn't enough.

It's really the dimensions of the pieces you need to know.

Look in this example where I've created the last two pieces that both have the same area but different dimensions.

TJOjLwM.png

With a simple "0.5m squared" square you'd need 9 tiles and you'd end up with overrun to cover a 4m squared area.

But with "0.5m squared" rectangles you'd end up with exact coverage with only 8 tiles.

Again, like has already been said, just work out how many tiles you need length ways and then times that by the number you need widths ways.

EDIT: Lol, how many different ways can I spell "squared" when I'm not paying attention! :)

Ha, just noticed every single one is wrong! :D

Who breaks a butterfly upon a wheel?

Are those numbers squared or just in metres squared or just metres, whilst also being wrong?

This is the confusing part that gets people. There's a distinct difference between a square metre, and a metre squared.

I'm pretty sure the numbers are right... where do you think I've gone wrong?

Going back to basics, a 1m x 1m square is "1m squared" is it not?

2m x 2m square is 4m squared.

This is the confusing part that gets people. There's a distinct difference between a square metre, and a metre squared.

Also interested to know exactly where the difference lies here... Can you link me to anything that explains what you mean more clearly?

EDIT: Wait, I think you're agreeing with me and disputing Magnolia am I right?

Your numbers add up, but your terminology doesn't.

2 square meters = two square areas each 1 meter x 1 meter
2 meters squared = 1 square area which is 2 meters x 2 meters

So:

2 meters squared = 4 squared meters

No.

A metre squared is 1m*1m, it is a square that is comprised of 10,000 1x1cm squares.

A square metre is a shape that is comprised of 1000x 1x1cm squares.

2 metres squared 2x 1*1m squares next to each other forming a 2:1 rectangle.

A square that is 4 square metres is a shape that is 1.41m*1.41m to the nearest 10cm.

It's confusing as hell, and whoever came up with the idea could do with a smack in the mouth.

The words square and metre are starting to lose meaning for me.

Have you figured it out yet?

Are the tiles sold separately or in a pack? What is the coverage of pack?

Add 7% for wastage (Working out floor area is 50% of my job)

No

by your own definition

1 metre squared is 1 metre x 1 metre

so 2 metres squared is a square with a side length of 2 metres.
i.e. 2 metres squared is 2 metres x 2 metres = 4 square metres.

2 square meters is 2x ( 1 metre x 1 metre) or an area approximately 1.41m x 1.41m

ref
A square metre is not the same as a metre square an area 2 metres wide by 5 metres long would be 10 square metres. In contrast, a 10-metre square (10 metres by 10 metres) is actually 100 square metres
