Failing graphics card?

My computer keeps booting up with a resolution of 1280 x 720. When I try to access the nvidia control panel, it says 'you are currently not using a display attached to an nvidia gpu'.

I tried reinstalling drivers, it froze. Re-installation works in safe mode, but no change.

This card is a geforce 580. When I put in my old 470, things work fine. Swapped back in the 580, same problem. So now I am using the 470.

Oddly, it stopped working when I restarted the PC after downloading and playing Arma 3 for the first time .

I'd rather have the 580 working if possible although by the sounds of it there's probably nothing I can do? I don't really want to buy a new graphics card but the 470 will be noisy and slower :(.

Thanks.
