failing harddrive? IDE or SATA replacement?

Hi,

It looks like my harddrive is failing (second within a year). Every few minutes, especially whilst browsing it starts making a 'clunking' noise and the PC locks up until it finishes after a couple of seconds.

I suspect that it may be near to failure, but there are a few tests I need to do first to confirm this. Although running SeaToolsforWindows never shows a problem. Something that might be messing this up is the fact that i've left my other dead harddrive in the PC, just disabled it from device manager.

Anyway if I conclude that it is the HD at fault then I need to get a replacement. However i'm not sure what type to get. I'm pretty sure my current one is IDE, but from looking at the PC spec it suggests that Sata is also supported, but thats all new to me. These are the specs

Primary IDE channel
40-pin connector on PCI local bus

Secondary IDE channel
40-pin connector on PCI local bus

Serial ATA drive
two 7-pin connectors

So basically should i get an IDE or SATA replacement? I know IDE works, SATA connections assuming they are there have never been used though, so i'm a little hesitant in going that route.

If anyone recommends going for SATA, what else do I need to know? For example I see SATA II mentioned all the time, but I suspect I may have SATA I assuming that exists.

Anything else I need to be aware of in getting IDE or Sata? Never had to replace a drive before, so not really aware of any issues or system requirements I would need to take account of.

Thanks

if we know what motherboard you have it would help.

sata is very good it uses a funny almost rectangle shaped plug

or these

get a drive that is sataII and SataI compatable normaly they have a jumper that you can set

sata drives have a different power connector to molex coem hdds come with both molex plugs and sata plugs
