Fair to get a cat?

the other two are 'meh' about it and will nip out for a sniff around but never seem to actually want to go out.

Inside:
Warm,
Trained human to provide food,
TV,
Padded carpets,
Soft cushions

Outside:

Cold,
Wet,
catch your own food,
Cars,
hard concrete or wet mud.

Inside anyday :D

I agree with others who say you should get two if you want kittens as they need a lot of attention. I wouldn't be worried about litter training, although you could put down more trays than you need at first, then remove as the cats get older.

Cats are fine indoors, so long as they've never been allowed out. One of my cats won't go outside even if you put her at an open door - she'll stick her head out, realise it's warmer inside and then run back to her food bowl.

I agree, our tabby called Barney just seems to think *NOM NOM NOM GRASS* whenever he hears the door though. ;)

I kept mine in the lounge for the first couple of weeks, they didnt seem to mind at all.

Did you expect them to write you a complaint?

Anyway if you get two, get from the same litter if possible so they get on. I don't know if its just our cats being awkward, but they were from seperate litters and don't like each other and always swipe one another as they go past, growl etc.

two cats is definitely the way forward with them being house cats, they will have a wonderful life with each other, Sleep and play together and keep each other happy when your not in.

Only downside of this is when one of them passes away, the other can get become very distressed.

We had two cats, one male one female (brother/sister) and the female passed on at around 13, For the first few months the male wasn't eating, lost half his body weight and was never happy. We thought he would starve to death but eventually he steadily came round and became the friendliest, nicest cat ever. He then lasted till he was 18 :)

We got our cat when we were both working full time (8-9 hours a day, 5 days a week) and she's fine. Since I started working at home, I discovered that that's sleepy time anyway!

She's a house-cat through our choice as well - we live quite near to a road with poor visibility and people speed down it. Also read too many headlines about the "Southampton Cat Poisoner" to risk it. She seems happy indoors - that's where mommy and daddy are!

Until recently she stayed in one room when we were out because we didn't want her chasing us outside. Now she comes to meet us at the door and is fine to be in the rest of the house whilst we're out.

I got a cat on Sunday. She's a rescue cat from http://www.catsactiontrust.org.uk. (They haven't taken her off the site yet!) She's a 6 year old medium haired tabby cat called 'Mittens'. I chose an older cat as I work in the day and rarely get home for lunch, but am about in the evenings and at weekends. She's just settling in. She's very affectionate. She pooped in her tray yesterday. It's worth speaking to a rescue centre, tell them your lifestyle and they'll find a cat to match.

You'll be fine. Cats adapt quickly and settle into a routine.

Our cat (Milo) does the following with minor variations:

11.00pm to 5.30am - cat sleeps
5.30am - gets me up to feed him and let him out (no cat flap unfortunately)
7.00am - I get up let him back in
7.30am - Cat waits at the top of the stairs for me to fluffle him (A fluffle involves a good head scratch, neck scratch, under chin scratch, and general body stroking. He gives me no peace until he has had his morning fluffle !! :D
8.00am - The wife and I go to work - Milo sleeps until our return at 5.00pm.
5.00pm - Milo has finished the food in his bowl and demands a fresh pouch.
5.15pm - He goes outside and stays out for a good couple of hours
7.00pm ish - Comes in for playtime. My wife plays with him with string and cat toys.
8.00pm ish - He settles down somewhere either in the living room or on our laps (if its on our laps he is after more fluffle time!).
10.00pm ish - He goes out again and either stays out the night (if its summer) or comes in again around 11.00pm
11.00pm - gets in his bed and sleeps.

The routine does vary a bit (especially in the summer when he spends a lot more time outdoors) but thats basically it. They are creatures of routine and have amazing biological clocks. I don't need an alarm clock, he wakes me (never the wife darnit!!) at 5.30 practically on the dot. Tried to get him out that habit but he scratches and chirps and makes a right racket until he gets his way. (see Simon's Cat on Youtube!). That's Milo minus the baseball bat !! :D

OK, so I've wanted to get a nice new kitten for a while, I love cats. The problem is that I work 12 hours shifts, 3 days a week. So when it's a kitten I'm not going to be able to give it much attention.

When it's older I should be able to let it out, the other thing is that I wouldnt want it to be out and about the house during the day while I am at work as I wouldnt want to find little surprises when I got home. So I would most likely keep in the kitchen, again whilst it's a kitten.

I would really love to get a kitten, but do you think it would be too cruel to keep it locked in the kitchen for so many hours a day at least to start?

Get 2. Look in the admag, there are people normally selling kittens in there.

Enjoy :)

(I did the above)

Lef it out once it's a couple of months old, it's cruel not to IMO. Also let it around your house a bit more, and you'll have to get used to dead animals! That's just natures way.

we have 3 cats . . . and a cat flap!

Our eldest is a solitary female (Sooty) soul - she likes her own company and is very affectionate (to us) - she is about 6 human years old and HATES The other two - she is always growling at them - but she loves us.

The middle (Bilhi) one is a boy we got as a kitten from a local rescue center - he is very noisey and a good looking cat - reasonably tame - he has Chronic Asthama (YES its true - Google AeroKat) and is sweet when he wants to be - meeooooows all the time. We got him 2 years ago on Christmas eve and he is a looooong cat.

The youngest (Mindy) we have had for 4 months - she is 5 months old'ish and ABSOLUTELY STUNNING - and again is from a rescue center - she is actually a ferrel cat - if it wasnt for Bilhi adopting her she would probably have run away by now - he looks after her and she follows him everywhere!

The two youngsters are so funny and they are all completely different in their own way!

Mindy gets the chop (spayd) tomorrow (Christmas Eve) as she has to stay in for about a week afterwards.

I am around all the time as my office is at home - we leave the cat flap open all the time - if they werent happy they would run away and we often get little visitors in the middle of the night too.

Sweeet!
