Evening folks, i'm writing to you tonight regarding the Fair usage policy of most ISP's, i have recently received an angry letter from Pipex stating that our household is abusing the 'unlimited' package.

Now, this is a household with 3 active computer users who are constantly downloading video clips, music, software, game demo's and so on.. they state that we use too much for a 'home' service, then what other service is possible?

We've been with pipex for 3-4 years now with no problems, yet all of a sudden we get this.

Are there any providers out there who dont have a fair usage policy? I'd hate to impact on any other peoples connections.. *cough*
 
Everyone will either have a fair usage policy or a cap. There are a few out there that dont really enforce it like BE Internet but most have some sort of policy or another.
 
Most ISPs have a cap, or just have a FUP which is effectively just a hidden cap.

If you really need unlimited, then you have to pay for it, for all the ISP know, you could download 24/7 at 7mbps, which would probably cost the ISP more in BT costs, than you actually pay them.

Do you know exactly how much you download each month? You could email them and ask for your usage stats. Then look for a package that offers just what you need. Although i would guess that you are using 50-100GB for them to have emailed you.

They didnt email, they sent a letter requesting our immediate signature to say we will cease using it as much as we have been...

Perhaps more than 100gb? Haha :)

they do have caps - unless you get the true uncapped package for 67 quid a month. they don't have a fair use policy which is good and they don't throttle dependant on protocol so they're good if you like using p2p.

but they do manage traffic when it gets busy. just recently the speeds are quite often between 2-4mb all day at the weekend and between 10pm and 1am weekdays. still a great service for the money but not quite as perfect as you make them out to be. most important thing is that this management keeps pings good for gamers and you never have problems with normal browsing like you get with other providers who manage traffic. :)
 
True "unlimited" download packages are very expensive, as the price on adsl24 indicates, if I remember, Zen do one for around £99, but if you are looking for a true unlimited account in the usual run of the mill Home packages for under £30 per month, you are just not going to find it. :)
 
Im on UKFSN's max 60 package (another Enta. reseller like ADSL24), caps more than enough for me, you get 60gb peak hrs a month, 330gb off peak a month, peak hrs are 8am till 10pm, off peak is 10pm till 8am, and all weekend, for only £30 a month, i download at all times, peak/off peak every day, and i dont even hit 60gb full total a month, think my highest has been about 52gb, with about 20gb of that being peak usage, you must have to be downloading non stop 24/7 to hit those caps. :D
 
most uk isps have Fair usage policy now days so moving will not change this
even the true unlimited deals have some form of FUP. the only thing you can do is
stay and pay there rip of price or move to an isp with more bandwidth.

there is 1 thing you could do to cut down the usage is not to hammer the connection
at peek hours ie from 6pm to 12am.. but most ppl like to use the net more at peek time
really.

bethere, ukonline seem to be ok but they have some form of FUP as well

gl on finding a good isp with no FUP and Nocap.

i was with pipex for over 4 years but i moved after they started traffic shaping there network
around a year ago now. shame really they use to be a great isp to.

i have same package - more than enough for most usage - there may be limits but you know exactly where you stand and can manage your downloads accordingly - none of this FUP crap - how the regulators even allow 'FUP' and 'unlimited' to describe the same package is beyond me!!

I used to hit 200Gb/month easy on pipex and they never batted an eye lid. They did start throttling port 119 but just changed the port my newshosting server uses

loadsamoney obviously has...... loadsamoney. the 60/330 package is daft when you could get the office 45 instead. double the upload and extended off peak hours. or judging by his usage he could save 10 quid a month on 30/300? :confused: :p
