Jeez is nothing beyond the scammers these days

A close friend of the missus recently purchased an iPod Nano for her daughters Birthday. She got it off some random website based in the UK. Neither of the wife's friend or her daughter are too savvy when it comes to technology and the like.

So when she tries to transfer over some music she is told that it only has 1.3gb available  After much removing music and reinstalling iTunes, I suggested going into the Apple Store to see if she could get some help. When she went in they were very helpful and when they ran the serial numbers the iPod had already been registered in America. According to the store it was the best fake they had seen. The only way they could tell it was a fake was by the PSU that came with it that didn't have the Apple Logo. Her best course of action was an immediate refund from the retailer.

After a lot of time waiting on the phone, she was offered to be upgraded to an 8gb at no cost. She claimed this was the third batch of counterfeit iPod's within a month. Suprisingly enough the site has now stopped selling all product lines whilst they "Complete a Stock Check" They are in their third week of doing the stock check.

Luckliy she got a full refund albeit in the form of a personal cheque from the companies owner. My advice get from a reputable source like OcUK rather than looking to save a couple of quid.

Anyone else heard of this ?

yes, i was goin to buy 1 of these's, due to the fact they are so cheap, and many of my mates have them, plus they are a mp4 2

:O no...

i thought you would be talking about the blatant fake ones.. which look awful, cheap, nasty and require special skills to navigate on the device..

quite surprising, I thought it would be relatively hard to replicate the ipod basically exactly.

I've seen some of these fake iPods on Engadget. Some are laughable, but it is worrying to see that some are now so good that even the Apple Store would have to run some fairly in-depth checks to tell it from the real thing. I will agree with your advice though, when I buy things I try to get them from either the manufacturer (if possible), or from a reputable retailer, i.e. OcUK.

my mate got one of ebay , was about 40quid for a generic hong kong mp3 and mp4 player that had 2gb of memory and looks similar to a nano , infact we swear the sound qualitys better than our other mates nano :p

I think there is a tv auction site selling these. Look exactly like an ipod, but in mp4 format and I think they have a slightly different user interface, they were going pretty cheap.

not on the obvious ebay fakes

the shop in the OP was obviously tricked by a dodgy supplier as they sound like proper good fakes , apple box etc

the one my mate gots only similarity to a real nano is its size and styling

Indeed. Full Apple warranty card. Even had an iTues CD which I defy anyone to tell the difference in appearance from the ones bundled with a legit iPod. Everything looked exatley the same as an iPod.
