Fake oil?

Genuine question: why does a completely standard BMW engine need such exotic expensive oil?

I have no idea.

It's a Dual VANOS Inline Six and despite being 'completely standard' will cost a 'completely lot' of money to fix if I use cheapo oil and it damages it :)

So why take the risk ?
Use your own advice "If you can't afford to run the car then you shouldn't buy it" ;)

I could afford to spend £250 on oil if I had to, this doesn't mean I will spend a penny more than I need to. I won't scrimp on quality or grade but if I can buy an identical product for less, and its legit, I see no reason not to...

I'm supplying my own oil for my dealer to use when carrying out my service. They'll only allow me to do this if the oil is BMW Approved.

Have you tried getting the dealer to match opieoil price?

The dealer doesn't do cannisters, it comes from a bulk drum so they will only supply 6.5 litres of it. Buy getting 2 4 litre cans, I should have sufficient spare for mid-service topups.

All M54 engines use oil between services - some use hardly any, others use gallons. Mine isn't too bad - there is a woman at work with a Z4 2.2 lease car on a 55 plate and it uses a litre every 1000 miles!

BMW specifications state anything up to 1 litre/600 miles is 'within tolerances'.

Cause it's the proper oil for the enginer developed by Castrol for BMW

Says it meets Porsche spec and reels off some list. Or do you need to use the exact spec oil to keep your warranty?

Porsche don't have a spec, they just say 'yeah this oil will do for us'
