It seems to me that alcohol is becoming something that people drink much less in the day and much more at night now. I'm not talking about getting utterly lashed, but merely having one drink just to enjoy the taste rarely seems to happen now.

For example - in very few jobs do people have lunchtime pints any more. It's hardly as if one pint of bitter or lager is going to have much influence on productivity. Visitors to property no longer seem to enjoy drinks as a token of hospitality.

I specifically remember when about 15 years ago the police came round to talk to my father about something and he sat there with the officer enjoying a whisky whilst he explained the problem.

We just had a plumber over here and I offered him a beer (it's about 1830, figure it must be his last call) and he looked at me as if I were utterly insane.

Yet people think nothing of drinking 32 units in an evening and going into work still utterly lashed in the morning.....

EDIT> i'm a cretin. move to GD please.

We used to nip to the pub every Friday for food, drinks and to randomly find ourselves adding an extra hour to our allotted time. That said, they clamped down on us doing that seeing as we were the core of the company leaving 1 or two in the office and business has grown since.

Used to do this a bit in my former workplace (current office doesn't have much of a team ethic, so...) but people never really drank because they just felt knackered afterwards...

And beer mings, anyway. ;)

Did the plumber drive to your place? If so then no matter how well intentioned you were in offering him a beer I can completely understand why he'd refuse.

I don't often have a beer at lunchtime and go back to work but on special occasions it is alright, the problem is that after a beer I seldom feel much like doing work, I'll usually be thinking about what I'm doing when I finish work so I tend to save it for just before holidays.

If I can get my clients to drive to the village I live, I sometimes have a few beers with lunch.

Just a shame I cannot get the client mullered. Would make me more money.

When I was on work experience popping out to the pub and having a beer with lunch was the norm - pretty much everywhere I've worked since its a big no-no.

to not be a dull moron?
Surely that's the other way round, the people drinking are the morons due to the alcohol inhibiting their brain functions? And the dull people are the ones that need alcohol to have a good time or make a good impression?

Makes sense to me.
