I am slightly ashamed to say that I bought both of these games on release and both are still sat on my games pile, unopened. :o

So in an effort to at least get one of them installed and played it's over to you. Therefore my question is which one and why?

I do eventually plan to play both but don't fancy flipping from one to the other, would just prefer to install the one for now and get stuck into it before even thinking about the next.
My spec is in my sig if performance on my rig is going to make a difference as to which might be more enjoyable. I do like my eye candy but also like decent fps, basically as close to 60 with v.sync if poss.
I'll also need to know about any patches, issues etc. Not too worried about after release DLC at the moment and no interest in any mods etc as would like to play 'as intended on release'.

Probably looking to install tomorrow PM, so get ya votes in. :D

Thanks.

fallout 3 deffinately.

I dunno if it is just my preference (probably) but I don't like bioware games after the first play through...of one of their games :p

People say that fallout 3 is just a reskinned version of Oblivion with different weapons, a different time, different people, and everything is brown, which is sort of true, but lets be fair: it is really a brand new game, just on the same engine, not the same game.

Mass effect however, if you have played KOTOR, you have played mass effect, if you have played dragon age, you have played mass effect, because they ARE all one in the same really. Bioware have one formula wich worked the first time, but is getting somewhat stale, whereas bethesda make some pretty kick ass games (before WET was released I would have said mmake kk ass gmes" rather than putting "some" in ;))

Because of those reasons, deffinately Fallout 3 first :D

I loved F3 and played it and all the DLC to DEATH, it's a great game. I'm going to go with ME, though. The story is absolutely epic, the voice acting is top notch, it's got a far more polished feel overall, I know some of this is down to the actual setting, one being post-apocalypse and the other shiny space stations, but the dialogue sections, menus, overall look of ME looks and works a lot better. Not to mention there is ME2 coming out very soon, and you'll be able to take your own version of Commander Sheppard into it.

In short, ME first, if just to slip right into ME2 in a matter of weeks, but definitely get stuck into F3 when you get a chance.

I'm not going to get into a lengthy debate about it, but putting Fallout 3 ahead of Mass Effect, because it's less like Oblivion than ME is like Kotor, just sounds absolutely bizarre. Kotor while being in space, has very little in common with Mass Effect, totally different combat system, dialogue system, party control, it's all very different. The thing it does have in common with Kotor is brilliant writing and a great engrossing story, which is in it's favour.

Now Fallout 3, if you've played Oblivion, everything is going to be very very familar, I loved both, but they are essentially the same game. F3 felt like a brilliant Oblivion total conversion in the Fallout universe.

My 4 pence, etc.

You need to decide what you want:

1) Willing to invest quite a lot of time just getting lost exploring, finding and acquiring new things in an amazingly realized world - Fallout

2) Want things to move a bit faster, a lot less open but an absolutely superb story - Mass Effect

You'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't play them both though they are two of the best games I've played in recent years.

oh, just a bit of an addon (lol pun), I have never tried addons in Mass Effect, however I have in fallout, and I know that you said that you don't want to use them for the first play through, but there are some that aren't detremental to the gameplay or story, but are visual addons. The first that springs to mind is one that improves the textures of Megaton, Rivet City and all of the Capital Wastelands. I will see if I can find it, but for the full experience, I would advise it beacuse chances are, if you aren't going to be evil, you will be spending a bit of time in megaton, and regardless of whether you are good, bad or neutral, you will be spending time in the capital wastelands and rivet city.

There is also one called fellout which makes the world look much better; more like an apocalyptic wasteland than just brown everywhere (fallout wouldn't last that long).

there are the 3 for megaton, capital wastland and rivet city :)

Mass Effect doesn't have the replayability imo. You can't truly ramp up the difficulty because the way they did it is just pathetic.

Fallout 3 for me, just be prepared for the potential of crashing... if it works fine (which tbh, i think its overstated that its broken) then its a brilliant game.

If you want to play it through once and probably leave it i'd go with ME though, you can experience so much of it in 1 playthrough while you probably need several for FO3.

Fallout 3 if it's anything like oblivion, you will never complete ;)

I think I've clocked about 140 hours in Oblivion doing some of the main quest, most of the side stuff and recently the expansion pack, with a little bit of exploration. I have come to the conclusion that I will never complete it (yes I can finish the main story but that isn't completing it in my eyes. It still draws me back and I clock another few hours when I want to play something a little slower.

Now FO3 doesn't seem as big (I don't think) as Oblivion but I'm slowly working my way through it and it is a very cool and immersive game - love the VATs mode..

ME on the other hand, as has been said has such a brilliant story line and had me gripped more than FO3. It seems more action packed and pretty immersive, it's also shorter (not a bad thing though) which allows you to try out a lot of the other character sets. If I was to choose which one to play first I think it'd have to be ME, or start FO3 do a bit and then pop onto ME and keep going back to FO3 throughout ME and ME2 heh.

^^ didn't see about not wanting to flip between the two ;)

I'd say start with Mass Effect. Both are great games, but if you start getting into Fallout 3 you'll never get round to playing ME, or anything else :).

Bioware have one formula wich worked the first time, but is getting somewhat stale, whereas bethesda make some pretty kick ass games (before WET was released I would have said mmake kk ass gmes" rather than putting "some" in ;))

Just so you know Bethesda is a devlopment company (Bethesda Game Studios) and has a publishing side of things under Zenimax (who own id software and others including BGS) called Bethesda Softworks

WET was published by Bethesda Softworks not developed as is Rogue Warrior, so FO3 and WET are not done by the same team. Just thought I'd add that lil bit ;)

I gave Fallout 3 a good 10 hours, but could not get into it.
The mistake i made was playing Mass Effect before it.

Fallout is huge and pretty.
It has very poor dialogue options.
It has a very poor story.

I just felt it did not have the quality or class of Mass Effect.

Very different games played for different reasons.

Mass Effect - Essentially linear with a few side quests and what there is is essentially padding to give an illusion of a longer and larger game, enjoyed mainly for the main story line and events dialogue which is done extremely well. It's a 3rd person space shooter with an exceptional story line, brilliant voice acting and true choice of morality that effects the game properly.

Fallout 3 - Massive open world, exploring it all would take more time than I think anyone thinks they would ever put into a game, enjoyed mainly for exploration, finding new things, getting side tracked and forgetting about the main story, spending ours trudging through the wasteland after some new map marker, finding new weapons and running out of ammo. Has a real habit of making time disappear.

Just play both. If that isn't a choice I would play Fallout first to see if you enjoy it, simply because if you really enjoy Mass Effect and play it first, F3 will be harder to get in to due to the difference in pace and game play style.
