Fall Out 3 or Mass Effect?

I would go with Fallout 3, it's awesome, I've had it since release and have got all the addons and still play it on the big tv with a 360 controller.
It's a great game :)

Mass Effect is also good but I got a bit bored with all the damn talking :p (I know that's the point of it, but it does get a bit much) Also the combat system is awful and exploring planets with the crappy little car thing isn't my cup of tea either.

ME was really good but a bit on rails, defiantly worth trying.

Fallout 3 was mainly really good, the first half to 2/3rds was ace but then it really dragged out. I went and explored almost the entire map and completed loads of side quests before completing the main story arc. This made me way over powered for the main story and just sucked the life out of the game. I also bought the DLC's before the end as well, this is a really bad idea as they let you level past the original level cap, I was one/two shotting the enemies near the end. Took weeks to bother completing the last few hours as I couldn't be bothered to play it as all challenge had been removed.

The thing I noticed with Fallout 3 was that the enemies got harder as I did - not sure if this was because I had the DLC enabled or not.

Thats how the game works, It was much worse in Oblivion. In Oblivion all enemies scale with you all the time. If I remember correctly FO3 Just scales the enemies to your level the first time you go to a new area and then they stay there so if you find it too hard you can go away, level up and then come back and steam roller them.

Fallout 3 is a really engrossing game. I haven't played Mass Effect so I can't comment on that but Fallout 3 while not strictly a hardcore RPG is the first RPG type game that I've ever played or been interested in.

I've tried several Final Fantasy games, and others of a similar nature but they never grabbed me with the levelling system and such. Fallout 3, while part shooter part RPG grabbed me and sucked me right in. I'd find myself starting a game at 4 or 5 in the afternoon and then just carrying on and on and on until 4 or 5 in the morning.

It totally has that special something where you just want to explore that one part of the world you haven't been to, you find yourself just saying one more quest, over and over. It's even worse when you go on the Fallout wiki and find out about all the things you've missed. The main quest is very short, you can probably complete it in a few hours, but it's the world around you and the tonnes of side quests and unnamed quests that there are. There's a fair few people to interact with in the game world and I reckon it's a cracking game. :)

Mass effect was so boring, couldn't get into it at all, very linear and ended abruptly.

Fallout 3 is a huge sprawling world which you can just get lost in. Definately the one I'd choose.

That's your choices really - Mass Effect does have some exploration, but is primarily linear. Fallout 3 is the opposite - follow the main story and its over before you know it, but take a different turn and the game goes on and on.

But both are great games. And yet, im not excited about either sequel:confused:

I've played both...

I found Mass Effect to be pretty, rather too linear, fun in terms of combat and to have the superior plot of the two games. There's girl on girl action, although I've yet to see it myself.

Fallout 3, well let's just say that I'm a sucker for wandering aimlessly and finding stuff. I enjoyed the huge, sprawling environments and the (albeit limited) sandbox features. That said, as someone else has pointed out, the game world sometimes seems massive (and consequently barren) simply for the sake of it. The combat is pretty dull after a while and, for me at least, the game started to drag at about 75% complete (main quest). Lastly, it's the brownest game I've ever played.

ME2 should be good!

@ OP

Do let us know your choice, after all the top quality input you have received :)

Thanks for all the great posts guys! Though not sure if it's made it any easier, lol. Going through the posts they both sound like games that I want and need to play but for different reasons, probably why I bought them both in the first place. And trying to tot up the scores from those that expressed a definite preference they pretty much come out equal!

So.......

I'm going to put them both back on the pile and play neither for another twelve months! :p

:D

Seriously though, I'm going to give Mass Effect a go first. Two reasons really...
Didn't realise the sequel was coming up so quick, had heard it announced and seen it talked about a fair bit but just had a look and it seems it is due out end of Jan!
Second. I played Oblivion and though I enjoyed it a lot to start with and I normally do enjoy big open worlds that I can be left to explore, I kind of got a bit lost in it sometimes and ended up getting bored. Probably my own fault but then when I tried to go back to the main quest I didn't have much interest in it and couldn't be bothered. Though I do think I'd prefer the setting in FO3. Oh and I never played KOTOR, so any similarities between that and ME shouldn't be a problem for me as hopefully it will seem fresh.

I will get around to FO3 eventually, hopefully I can get through ME pretty quickly with out rushing it or feeling I have missed too much out. But then as much as I like a good story and cut scene it does sound like it might get a bit waffley. So maybe I'll be installing FO3 a lot sooner.

Thanks again guys. :)

Good reply, chaosophy.
They are both quality games, similar but also very different.

If you have not played a Bioware game before, Mass Effect is a perfect introduction.
Thats how it worked for me anyway, i'm now their biggest fan :)

Enjoy ;)
