Fallen Earth

Well I can only give my experience from doing the trial, so have no idea about end-game etc. The game is buggy in parts, the tutorial isn't great, but when you get down into the meat and veg of the game it's fairly decent and quite enjoyable. The population is all on one big server from what I remember, like EVE - so there were always people on (at least when I was on) and I found most people helpful, theres a help channel and a few guilds for noobs to join which was a massive help to me.

You probablly know already but the style of play is somewhere between sandbox mmo and quest giving etc. I enjoyed what I played of it, the only reason I haven't subbed to be honest is because I'm waiting on a couple of other MMO's so don't really want to get into it at the mo.

Oh.. and they are bringing in player housing soon - if that's your cup of tea.

I've just purchased it, and as I usually hate MMORPG's (Except EVE but I'm taking a break) that's a big accolade. Friendly player base (invited into a newbie guide within a day of playing which has been great for learning the ropes), fun gameplay (run-and-gun) and a massive playing area.

One of the things I hate about MMO's usually is that the landscape is so clogged-up with mobs you can't explore without inadvirtantly grinding. In FE however there are large expanses with only sporadic mobs aloowing you to wander.

Give the trial a go.

I'm quite tempted to give this a try. Is it anything like Neocron? As I used to play that for years and loved it, though that game did get me into playing spell casters over gunslinging characters though lol.

How is it doing now that most of the developer team have been laid off? If it hadn't been for Fallout I probably would have given this a go. Heard OK(ish) things about the game, but it looked good to me.

It's a very good game and I've been hooked for about a month now. Apart from this, EVE and UO I've always found MMORPG's tedious, especially wow. This one's a refreshing change. The community seem mature and helpful and if you do start playing make sure to join the T.E.M.P.S guild which is a support group for levels <25. The crafting's great, everything is player made from guns to motorbikes and the combat is actually interactive, no clicking and waiting.

Despite the recent company restructuring a big patch has just been released opening up PVP beyond the confines of 'PVP areas' which seems to be a big step forward and increasing customisation options for vehicles.

Fallout online is a long way off if it does come out at all. This would be a perfect game to play in the interim (It is for me).

Play it. ;)

I may actually give this a go. I'm bored recently and I've been after something to play.

I don't hear many people talking about this game though.

Seems more hard core than other mmos ive played (a good thing). But also feels very 'clunky'. The combat will take a lot of getting used to, switching from combat mode to movment mode im finding a pain at the moment.

TDenic:

There are a few instanced mission locations but these are rare from what I have seen so far and are usually limited to an interior of a building. Oterwise it's 99% fully open. There's only one server and there are plenty of people on as far as I have seen, especially around hubs as you would expect. The game area is huge but even when taking that into account you still bump into people in the middle of nowhere.

bushmins:

I've never found the mechanic of transferring to and from combat mode an issue. It's just a click of the middle mouse button.

Keeping in mind I've only been playing for a short while, the game seems to lend itself to casual play much more than other mmo's. I've got three characters on the go which I alternate between and each are progressing at a good rate even though I too play pretty casually.

The crafting is very good in the game and I'd recommend making a crafter character to start with. I've been outfitting my alts with equipment made by my main so they're progressing at an accelerated rate. However, there are of course level restrictions on items.

Tips:

- General recommendation is to specialise in one of the weapon skills. Pistol, Rifle or Melee. The concensus seems to be that it's better to be very good at one than middling in several.

- look to join T.E.M.P.S as previously mentioned. They're a great source of support and a source of people of the same experience level to group with.

- Plan your character build ahead of time. However, minor respecs are now available to purchase and are relevtively cheap at low levels. This mean if you do ****-up it's not the end of the world. It apparently gets extremely expensive at higher levels so it's best not to wait though.

- Add waypoints to your map to label goods sources of components for crafting.

-The tutorial is tedious and not very representitive of the game as a whole. It's worth doing but don't let it sour you first taste of the game.

-Do all the missions in the starter towns. You get some good starting skills and equipment. Kind of obvious but you're not obliged to do them.

-You get given a horse at the start. It's a bit rubbish. Look to train/craft a riding horse as soon as you are able.

Probably more but it's all pretty self-explanitory.

Um, well the patcher needs work. 250MB to go and the transfer has completely stopped, so I closed it and reloaded it, and its....at 3GB to go again.

Ok Cheers Treebiter, used to be a hardcore grinder/farmer but just don't have the time/can't be bothered now. Would be nice to see if this fills a little void, though I was looking at LOTRO given that its going free to play.

I'm installing the patch now. Will give is a go later today after the gym. Hopefully I'll find it decent!

I to was thinking of going LOTRO another go, although I've played the trial a good 3-4 times now and haven't been able to spend longer than an hour on it.

I don't know why this is, maybe because I was too used to WoW.

Well, I'll see how Fallen Earth turns out.
